New Executive Director of the Ignatian Center

Friday, Jun. 24, 2011

Dear Faculty and Staff,

The search for the Executive Director of the Ignatian Center has been successfully concluded. I am pleased to announce that Michael (Mick) McCarthy, S.J. has been selected as the next executive director and will begin his new duties on July 18.

Father McCarthy joined the faculty at Santa Clara in 2003 and is currently associate professor with a joint appointment in the Classics Department and in the Religious Studies Department. He holds the Edmund Campion, S.J. Professor endowed chair. In addition to his teaching role at Santa Clara, Father McCarthy has served as the Director of the Catholic Studies Program since 2008.

An alumnus of Santa Clara with a bachelor’s degree in Classical Languages, Father McCarthy went on to receive the 4-year M.A. (Oxon.) in Literae Humaniores from Oxford University, and a master in divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. In 2003, he earned a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Notre Dame, with an emphasis on early Christianity.

Father McCarthy brings a passion for Jesuit education and spirituality, as seen in his successful career as a Jesuit priest, Catholic theologian and teaching scholar. Students, faculty, staff, trustees, and the larger community all will benefit from his energy and insight.

I thank the search committee for their diligence and timeliness in the search process. I also thank Denise Carmody for serving these last six months as the Interim Executive Director of the Ignatian Center. Since the departure of Kevin Quinn, S.J. to become president of The University of Scranton, Denise has led the Center during this time of transition with dedication and generosity.

Please join me in welcoming Father McCarthy to his new appointment and thanking Denise for her generous service.

Michael E. Engh, S.J.
