Dear Members of the University Community,
As part of our continuing dialogue, Bob Warren, Vice President for Administration and Finance, and I met with the Benefits Committee yesterday to discuss my decision on health care coverage. In a fruitful conversation, the Committee made a recommendation to Bob, which I find acceptable.
- While the decision to eliminate elective abortion coverage from the University health care plans is final, implementation will be delayed until 1 January 2015 in order to allow the Benefits Committee sufficient time to explore options (such as a third-party administrator) beyond the University plans for faculty and staff members. This delay will also afford us the opportunity to review state exchanges and modifications being clarified under the Affordable Care Act.
- The Benefits Committee will consult broadly with the University community (including the President) before making any recommendations to Bob Warren for alternative health care options for the calendar year 2015.
I believe that these recommendations, which grew from ongoing consultation, are reasonable. I thank the Benefits Committee members for their input and advice, and look forward to receiving their recommendations in the coming months.
