Letter from Bob Finnochio to SCU Faculty Senate

As you know, the Board of Trustees ("Board") is responsible for selecting the new President of Santa Clara University.  The Board adopted a new policy on succession planning for the top administration, including the President.

As part of that policy, the Faculty Senate is to recommend a pool of faculty members from which 2 will be selected to serve on the Search Committee.  Recommended faculty members should, among other qualities, have:

  • an understanding of and appreciation for Jesuit higher education in general and Santa Clara in particular;
  • in addition to a solid understanding of their college or school, a University perspective since they represent all faculty rather than one constituency or department within the faculty; and,
  • a familiarity with the other Jesuit colleges and universities within the U.S. in order to search actively for candidates.

The following sets out the procedure for the appointment of the 2 faculty members to serve on the Search Committee:  The Faculty Senate shall submit a list to the Chair of the Board of Trustees of 12 faculty members:  2 from the School of Business; 2 from the School of Engineering; 2 from the School of Law; 2 from the School of Education, Counseling Psychology & Pastoral Ministries; 4 from the Colleges of Arts and Science, 2 of which from the Arts/Humanities and 2 from the Sciences.  The Board has designated its Executive Committee to appoint 2 of the recommended faculty members from those submitted.

Later, in another memo, the Chair of the Board of Trustees will specify the process for engaging the campus community (faculty, students, and staff) as well as Trustees, Regents, Alumni and friends of the University during the interview process.

Please provide me with the list of the 12 recommended faculty members by April 7, 2008.
