Summary of Presidential Selection Process
The following is an outline summary of the Presidential Selection Process.
- The Presidential Selection is made by Board of Trustees.
- The Board is aided by a Search Committee.
- The Search Committee is appointed by the Board.
- The Search Committee consists of 7 to 11 members (but may be increased by the Board).
- The Search Committee members are:
- 4 to 6 Trustees
- 1 to 2 Faculty members
- 1 to 2 Academic or Student Life Administrators
- 1 to 2 Jesuits
- Such other members as may be appointed by the Board.
- The Executive Committee selects the Chair of the Search Committee.
- Faculty members are recommended by the Faculty Senate (The Faculty Senate shall submit a list to the Chair of the Board of Trustees of 12 recommended faculty members: 2 from the School of Business; 2 from the School of Engineering; 2 from the School of Law; 2 from the School of Education, Counseling Psychology & Pastoral Ministries; 4 from the College of Arts & Sciences, 2 of whom shall be from the Arts/Humanities and 2 from the Sciences.). The Board shall appoint 2 of the recommended faculty members from those submitted.
- The Academic/Student Life Administrators are recommended by the President in consultation with the Provost. (The President shall submit a list of at least 5 administrators.) The Board shall appoint 2 of the recommended administrators from those submitted.
- The Executive Committee approves all recommended Search Committee members.
- The outgoing President and the Executive Committee shall explain to the Search Committee the role of the Society of Jesus in the selection process.
- The Search Committee shall utilize those documents described in the Succession Planning Document to guide the search and selection process.
- The Chair of the Board of Trustees shall, along with 2-3 other Trustees (one of whom shall be the Chair of the Search Committee and another, a Jesuit) shall meet with the Provincial.
- The Chair of the Board of Trustees shall meet with the Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose.
- The Chair of the Board of Trustees will specify the process for engaging the campus community and Trustees, Regents, Alumni and friends of the University.
- The Chair of the Board of Trustees will consider key constituencies (from a list submitted by the outgoing President in consultation with the Provost and Vice President of University Relations) for participation in candidate interviews.
- The Search Committee will recommend the candidate(s) to the Board of Trustees.
- The Board of Trustees after due deliberations following the guidelines in the Succession Planning Document shall make the Presidential selection.
- The Chair of the Board of Trustees will outline the communication plan for announcing the appointment to the campus community and general public.
- The Executive Committee in consultation with General Counsel will review and approve the offer to be made to the candidate.
- The outgoing President and Vice President of University Relations will recommend a plan for the new President’s inauguration and related calendar of events.
