Why do you want to serve as an International Ambassador at Santa Clara University?
I would really like to help students who will be studying abroad and give them any advice I can offer. I feel like there are certain things I would have wanted to know before I left to study abroad. I also want to be open to meeting with students if they have any particular questions about the London program and give them insight into what to expect and my experience.
What were the deciding factors in choosing your study abroad program-location?
The program was geared toward business majors and there was an internship opportunity which were both very important factors in my decision. Also, I have always thought that London would be a great place to study and live in.
Describe a defining moment in your abroad experiences and how that experience(s) has affected you personally, intellectually, vocational, spiritually, or academically.
It seems silly but one defining moment was when I first felt comfortable using the Tube (the subway transportation) and the buses to get around London. Knowing where to go and the fear of getting lost was something I worried about. When I felt that I was confident in travelling around the city, I knew I had discovered a new way of living as I have never really depended on public transportation before. This is a different mentality and experience all together and it really immersed me in London's culture. I learned more about what it was like to be a Londoner, instead of an American who was temporarily in London.
What advises, recommendations would you give to prospective study abroad students? In retrospect, how would you prepare differently to maximize the study abroad experience?
I think prospective study abroad students need to utilize their resources. The study abroad office and ambassador team can help you but you also need to put in the effort. Make sure to ask questions when you have them and be timely with important tasks such as getting a visa if needed. Also, through the whole process, remember that it all your effort will be worth it in the end! To maximize the study abroad experience, students should pursue their interests within their new environment but also be open to trying new things. The study abroad experience is so unique and know that this is your time to try something different and get out of your comfort zone.
