Why do you want to serve as an International Ambassador?
My study abroad experience was amazing in so many ways and I feel a way I can continue in my exploration of culture and expand on the experience is by teaching prospective students. My time abroad was so life changing and it excites me to know that a whole new group of students will be embarking on this journey. I hope to guide them as much as I can to make sure they have as great of a time as I did, or even better!
Deciding factor for studying abroad?
I was looking for a small program in Spain where I could truly be immersed into the culture and environment, forcing me out of my comfort zone. In Granada, I was forced to be in a primarily-speaking Spanish place with such an eclectic influence of Catholicism and Islamism. These aspects made every day in the city an adventure as every street revealed something new and exciting.
Defining Moment Abroad?
A defining moment in my experience was the day I realized that I had actually assimilated into the environment. I could clearly speak Spanish, get around on my own, and felt comfortable doing so. I finally felt like Granada was my home and that I could actually survive on my own in a different country. This was an awakening moment that helped me see that I really did not need to depend on my parents or other people in order to create a life of my own. Coming back with this knowledge, I am a stronger more confidant person and know that with determination, I really can do what I set my mind to.
Advice to Prospective study abroad students?
My advice would be to not restrain yourself during your time abroad. Don't be held back by what you left behind at home, you'll be back in just a few short months. This is a blank canvas in your life. Do with it what you want. It's one of the few chances you have! Appreciate every minute of it, even if you're just doing your daily walk to class. Try to notice something new about your city everyday and really savor everything you can.
