Why do you want to serve as an International Ambassador?
I want to be able to share my abroad experiences with other, especially any students who are thinking of going abroad and are interested in the city, and or country in which I studied and traveled. Last year throughout the application process I was lucky enough to meet the international ambassadors who studied in Granada and they were more than happy to help me and answer any questions I had. Now that I've studied abroad I want to be able to help in the same way they helped me.
Deciding factor for studying abroad?
I knew I wanted to go to a spanish speaking country, especially Spain since high school, but because Madrid and Barcelona are such gigantic cities and because so many Santa Clara students choose those programs, I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and explore a smaller city. I had seen many pictures of Granada and wanted to learn more. There was something so enchanting about the location, its history, and the experiences of others who studied there that made me realized that was the place for me.
Defining Moment Abroad?
While studying in Granada we had the chance to travel to Morocco with the program as a 4 day vacation. While there, we related its history to that of Andalucia and highlighted the subjects we were studying in many of our site visits around the cities there. Our program leader for the week told us a story about an NGO he had started when he was 17 in an attempt to educate those who had nothing and were living in the slums of his city. When we actually saw the way these people had to live on a daily basis I was shocked but appreciated the chance to learn about these realities. Over all the trip to Morocco was a life-changing experience that showed my just how lucky I am.
Advise to Prospective study abroad students?
Take one day at a time when you first begin your study abroad experience. There may be hardships and times when you feel depressed and lonely, but when you look back, you will know that everything you experience while abroad was worth it.
