International Ambassador

Why do you want to serve as an International Ambassador?
I hope to share my experience abroad with fellow SCU students that are also interested in going abroad. Through sharing my experiences, I hope to lend some advice and share my enthusiasm for going abroad. Most of all, I want to let anyone who is thinking about going abroad know that it is a life changing experience where they will grow and meet new friends and experiences. These memories and lessons learned can be carried on through the rest of your life. It is truly unforgettable.
Deciding factor for studying abroad?
Although London was not my first initial choice, more research proved that it would be most beneficial in terms of major and class credit. I also was able to meet with an Ambassador myself and she shared with me that I would have the same study abroad experience that any other person would have in a country that didn't speak English. At first, I was worried the experience wouldn't be the same because they also spoke English in London. What I found was that it was still an eye opening experience. Even though they speak the same langauge, the culture and customs are different and you are learning new things everyday.
Defining Moment Abroad?
When our semester break finally ended, I was able to look back on the entire experience being abroad thus far. Although I was only halfway through the quarter abroad, I felt like so much had happened. I have never been away from home or my family for such an extended amount of time, and going abroad was a big accomplishment for me personally. Going abroad I realzied how much I could do on my own and how happy I was. In that short time I had learned what it was like to live on my own, travel abroad to other countries, and much more. Living in a suburb city my whole life, London was great change, and I found how much I liked living in a metropolitan city. It's amazing how much you experience in a short amount of time.
Advice to Prospective study abroad students?
When going abroad, remember to have an open mind and take in everything you can. At first, it's easy to compare everything to home and want exactly what you had in the states with you. However taking in new things with an open mind and good attitude will allow every new experience to be a funny/memorable story you'll be able to look back on and enjoy. I would also have to say that you should really enjoy the place you live in. While it's easy to travel to other places while abroad, you should really spend as much time in the location you have chose. You'll find that even after you time abroad you still might not have been able to see all there is to see. Time flies by!
