Director, External Relations
Susan M. Ballati, PhD, has over twenty years of experience in both for profit and non-profit organizations. She began her career in Silicon Valley and was involved in marketing communications in several high tech electronics companies including Zilog, LSI Logic, and Chips and Technologies.
She segued into the non-profit sector as Director of Development for The Santa Fe Institute an interdisciplinary research and education organization focused on complex adaptive systems research (aka complexity science). Located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, she spent 13 years as the senior marketing person, and together with the president and research scientists, raised $20,000,000 in six years. She grew a Business Network Program from 6 members to 60 members with each organization paying an annual fee of $30,000 for membership. She returned home to San Francisco in 2007 where she was the Senior Director of Development at The J. David Gladstone Institutes, an independent basic biomedical research organization affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco. During her tenure she introduced significant new donors to the organization, and her efforts helped to close out Gladstone?s first-ever capital campaign successfully ($35,000,000).
Born in San Francisco, she has a BA from Santa Clara University, an MPA from San Francisco State University, and in 2005 received a PhD in Education from the University of New Mexico. Her dissertation: Academic Scientific Workshops as a Model for Interdisciplinary Communication and Collaboration was published in July 2010 by LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing AG & Co. KG.
