Chris Bachen offers courses that deal with the role of media and communication technology in the lives of individuals, groups, and societies. Her area of research specialization focuses on media in the lives of young people. She has conducted studies on media and the political socialization of youth; advertising and young people’s understandings of romance; media and family life; and more recently, the development and impact of websites and computer games on young people’s civic engagement. She collaborates regularly with Chad Raphael (Communication) and Pedro Hernández-Ramos (Education), along with several undergraduate research assistants. Together, they have co-authored many articles appearing in journals such as Media & Society, Games & Culture, and Political Communication. Currently, Bachen also serves as director of assessment for the university where she coordinates and supports projects that assess student learning in a variety of contexts. She is also co-director of the Collaborative for Teaching Innovation, where she is involved with research and programming dealing with technology-enhanced learning.
