Inclusive Excellence

The University Council on Inclusive Excellence consists of 12 members who serve on the Council’s four working groups:
  • Core curriculum and learning environment – curricular and co-curricular
  • Staff mentoring, education and training
  • Faculty recruitment, retention and mentoring
  • Student recruitment, mentoring and retention

Highlights for the coming year include the Inclusive Excellence Roundtable (co-facilitated by Allen Hammond and Atom Yee) to facilitate diversity in faculty recruitment and hiring; the inclusion of a diversity training component in the orientation for all new staff; and exhibits and book displays in the Multicultural Reading Area associated with the fall quarter Diversity Core Curriculum courses and Latino History month.

In 2007, the Council on Inclusive Excellence developed a campus-wide theme to create synergy around a common diversity-related topic: Identity: Individuality, Community, Humanity – Exploring our identity to understand ourselves, others, and how we relate in the world.

Winter 2010 Identity speakers:

  • Sylvia Hurtado, Professor and Director, Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and IS, will be on campus on Thursday, 1/28/10.
  • Troy Duster, Director, Institute for the History of the Production of Knowledge at New York University and Chancellor’s Professor of Sociology at UC Berkeley, will be on campus on Wednesday, 2/10/10.
