Members of the Provost’s Council on Diversity, Multicultural Learning and Inclusive Excellence serve two- or three-year renewable terms and devote approximately 20 percent of their time to the Council. The Council collectively provides leadership for advancing the importance of diversity, multicultural learning, and inclusive excellence.
Lucia Albino Gilbert

Lucia Albino Gilbert is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Psychology and Professor of Counseling Psychology. As Provost, she is the chief academic officer with responsibility for all educational programs and offerings of the University, as well as academic policies, faculty affairs and personnel matters, and student life issues. She provides leadership to the Deans, Vice Provosts, Chief Information Officer, and Director of Athletics and Recreation to ensure that the educational programs and offerings are consistent with the University's vision, mission, and values.
Prior to being appointed Provost at Santa Clara, Dr. Gilbert served as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, Professor of Educational Psychology, and Frank C. Erwin, Jr. Centennial Honors Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Gilbert has an extensive record of scholarship including four books, one edited book, and more than 70 articles in refereed journals. She also has made more than 50 invited presentations and presented more than 70 papers at professional meetings.

Allen S. Hammond
Professor of Law

Focus: Recruitment and retention of faculty
Allen Hammond is a professor in the School of Law and holder of the Phil and Bobby Sanfilippo University Chair. He is also a director of the recently developed Broadband Institute in California. He is a graduate if Grinnell College, the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania, and School of Law at the University of Pennsylvania. He has held a variety of positions in the private and public sectors, including attorney and program manager at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration; general counsel for WJLA-TV; consultant and lecturer at Howard University; visiting associate professor of law at Syracuse University; senior attorney, Media Access Project; senior attorney at MCI Communications Corporation/Satellite Business Systems; and associate general counsel at MCI Communications Corporation. He also has published extensively on media regulation and information technology topics. Professor Hammond teaches courses in Contracts, Cyberspace, Mass Communications and Telecommunications Law.

Eva Blanco
Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid
Focus: Recruitment and retention of students
As part of the enrollment management team, Eva Blanco is responsible for managing the day-to-day undergraduate recruiting and outreach, application evaluation, and yield efforts of the university. She also facilitates communication between key departments involved in the enrollment process, including financial aid, housing, IT, Drahmann Advising, as well as other departments. Prior to working at Santa Clara University, Eva directed marketing and sales for domestic and international media companies and also served on the Schools Committee for her alma mater. She is a native of Venice, California, and a graduate of Yale College with a B.A. in Economics. She is now completing her master's degree in Higher Education Administration at Santa Clara's School of Education, Counseling Psychology and Pastoral Ministries.

Sterling Andrew Starbird
Professor of Operations and Management Information Systems

Focus: Curriculum and pedagogy
Drew Starbird is a professor in the Leavey School of Business (LSB) as well as the Faculty Director for the Undergraduate Business Programs. Drew did his undergraduate study at UC Davis and received a MBA from Santa Clara and a Ph.D. from Cornell University. He began teaching at Santa Clara in 1987 and has served on the LSB rank and tenure committee, the dean's search committee, and as chair of the MBA policy committee and undergraduate leadership team. Drew also serves on the Faculty Core Committee on Diversity, which is implementing the 2009 University Core Curriculum. He teaches statistics and operations management at the undergraduate, MBA, and executive MBA levels. His research interests focus on the economics of information about quality with a particular interest in food safety.

Lester Deanes
Assistant Dean for Student Life
Focus: Educating and training of staff, faculty, and students working with first-and second-year students
Lester Deanes completed his master's degree in Communication at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, and received a B.A. in History from Lake Forest College. His life's passion has been learning and serving others. His higher education research interests are in first-year students, power and privilege, and in first-generation college students' experience/development. In his role as Assistant Dean for Student Life, he is responsible for engaging staff, faculty and students to try to view the world through the lenses of others. He believes it is through this self-examination that understanding, respect and embrace of difference in possible. His goal is to guide students in making the most of their time at Santa Clara.

Mary Ho
Program Director, Office for Multicultural Learning
Focus: Thematic event planning/ campus programming that makes Santa Clara's diverse campus more visible and further fosters community
Mary Ho has a wealth of experience in diversity education, student leadership development/training, and program management/development. She completed a master's degree in Higher Education Administration at New York University with an emphasis in Multicultural Affairs. Prior to coming to Santa Clara, Mary worked at Santa Mary's College as the founding Director of the Delphine Intercultural Center. She also has held university positions at New York University and University of California, Irvine. Mary received her bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of California, Irvine.
