Diversity at Santa Clara University

Council and Its Goals/Activities

The Council, which the Provost chairs, has as its overarching goal creating and sustaining an inclusive community striving for excellence. The process of achieving inclusive excellence belongs to everyone - students, staff, and faculty. Institutional changes come about through the actions of many, not just a few. The Council collectively strives to provide leadership for advancing the importance of inclusive excellence on our campus by creating and implementing activities and structures that enhance the "active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity - in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in communities (intellectual, social, cultural, religious, and geographical) with which individuals might connect in ways that increase one's awareness, content knowledge, cognitive sophistication, and empathic understanding of the complex ways individuals interact within systems and institutions."

The University Council consists of 12 members who serve on the Council's four working groups:

  1. Core curriculum and learning environment - curricular and co-curricular
  2. Staff mentoring, education and training
  3. Faculty recruitment, retention and mentoring
  4. Student recruitment, mentoring and retention
