President's Special Recognition Awards

The President's Recognition Award honors faculty who set an example for students and colleagues as teaching scholars and whose recent work has advanced the mission of Santa Clara in significant ways.

2004 Award Winners

Gregory Baker
Economics

Greg earns top evaluations for his teaching, especially the undergraduate capstone course.  He has successfully led the Food and Agribusiness Institute through the recent re-focusing of its work, and a re-structuring of the MBA agribusiness curriculum.  His research has explored the human implications of Agri-technology and identified food safety issues to be considered as technology enables increased production.  He has done seminal work on issues relating to biogenetic foods.  His recruiting and teaching of leaders from developing nations in the Summer Management Institute of Agribusiness has advanced and distinguished the excellence of Santa Clara as a Jesuit university.

James Koch
Management

Jim has built the Center for Science, Technology, and Society into one of the four Centers of Distinction at Santa Clara University and one of the leading centers of its kind in the country.  From stimulating symposia and a major bi-annual conference that attracts scholars and practitioners from around the world, and the publication of STS Nexus, to his collaboration with the Tech Museum of Innovation, the World Bank Institute, the United Nations Development Program, and the Global Forum, Jim has contributed to initiatives that realize the benefits of science and technology for all of humanity.  An important new program of STS which Jim is directing is the Global Social Benefit Incubator designed to help technology innovators from around the world develop practical know-how through an intensive two-week residential program of instruction and mentoring. In the Center for Science, Technology, and Society, Jim has created something of great value not only to Santa Clara University but to the world beyond.

Barbara Molony
History

Barbara's teaching has earned consistently high evaluations and she continues to break new ground in her scholarship with two new books forthcoming - one published by Harvard University Press and the other by Stanford University Press.  She has helped build a greater understanding of Asian studies as well as women and gender issues, helping advance Santa Clara's commitment to diversity and social justice.  She has provided extraordinary service to her profession and to the University as director of the Program for the Study of Women and Gender, as a member of a number of important committees, including most recently the University Rank and Tenure Committee, and as editor of STS Nexus.  Her leadership, committed citizenship and service have made a positive difference in the life of Santa Clara University.

William Spohn
Religious Studies

Bill's students praise his depth of theological insight, student-centered classes, his concern for students as whole persons, and his ability to engage them in active consideration of the ethical issues of our time.  His research has given him a national reputation in Catholic moral theology and his scholarship and administrative service have helped build bridges between theological principles and some of the vital issues of our time.  The major international conference on Justice in Jesuit Higher Education he oversaw has had international impact.  In addition, he was instrumental in ensuring Santa Clara's award of a nearly 2 million dollar grant from the Lily Endowment.  His leadership and the support of this grant has enabled us to create campus programs that integrate faith commitments, professional choices, and leadership in society and assist students, staff, and faculty in finding and following their calling in order to make a positive difference in the world.
