What might the book as a material artifact have to teach scholars and students across the disciplines? Join Dr. Michael Suarez, S.J., Director of Rare Book School and Professor of English at U of Virginia for this presentation. Co-sponsored with the Library for Open Access Week.

  •  Dec 3 - What's Learning Got to do with Technology? What's Technology got to do with Learning?

    Before we can answer those two questions, we have to think again about technology itself. Using two books as a conceptual framework, Brian Arthur's "The Nature of Technology" and Kevin Kelly's "What Technology Wants," Gardner Campbell (Vice Provost for Learning Innovation and Student Success, Virginia Commonwealth) will explore the ways in which education itself is a technology, and how we might optimize our use of computing technologies in support of learning.

  •  Dec 12 - Making the most of digital tools for student learning: smart phones to iPads to laptops to Canvas

    Join faculty colleagues and Apple Distinguished Educator Joel Davies for a workshop that combines discussions of pedagogy with exposure to digital tools. This hands-on workshop will include time for faculty to design/redesign an assignment or learning activity for a specific course. Faculty participants will bring in a specific assignment, class activity or module they wish to develop, enhance or retool. The workshop will include how assignments and activities can be linked with Canvas.

    More about Joel Davies--Joel Davies joined Apple as a Higher Education Curriculum Development Executive after 13 years as a Professor in the Journalism, Media & Computing Department at Creighton University. He was awarded the Father Kelley Teaching Innovation Award at Creighton, where he led a complete overhaul of both Computer Science and JMC to merge the two departments and design degree programs that reflected 21st century teaching and learning. He also advised Studio Blue, a student-run design agency. Joel is a regular speaker at the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities Communications Conference advising other Jesuit schools on methods to update curriculum and technology.
