VITAL (Vitality in Teaching and Learning): Fall Quarter Meetings

VITAL is a group of faculty who meet about twice a quarter to discuss issues in teaching and learning. VITAL is open to all SCU faculty, and is a great way to learn more about college teaching and share ideas with colleagues. The first meeting this quarter we will continue our discussion of selections from Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers (details to come). Additional topics and readings will be decided by the group.
The Well-Crafted Assignment: Essays and Reflections

Short writing assignments are used in a variety of disciplines. Come learn from a panel of experts about the effective use of such assignments across a variety of disciplines. What makes for a good writing prompt? How do rhetorical requirements differ across disciplines and course objectives? How does one balance the learning objectives of topical content and improved writing skills? What are some tips and tricks for efficient grading of written work?
Career Flexibility and Work-Life Balance: Resources for SCU Faculty

Bill Sundstrom, Associate Provost for Faculty Development, will speak on the importance of facilitating faculty career flexibility and work-life balance and provide an overview of SCU policies and programs.
Academic Integrity at SCU: The Student Perspective

A panel of students will discuss cheating at SCU: How common is it, and why do students do it? What do faculty need to know to prevent or manage academic integrity violations?
