Elsa Chen, Ph.D.

Interim Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Development

Elsa-ChenDr. Elsa Chen is serving a one-year term as the Interim Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Development while Eileen Razzari Elrod is on sabbatical leave. She reports to Diane Jonte-Pace, the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. Chen has worked closely with Faculty Development for many years, through her leadership of the Women of Color Network, a collaborative initiative of the Faculty Development Program, the Office for Multicultural Learning, and the Women's and Gender Studies Program. She also has served as a member and chair of both the Academic Affairs Committee and the Rank and Tenure Committee for the Natural and Social Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.  In her interim administrative role, Chen's responsibilities include support for faculty career planning and professional development; new faculty programs; teaching support; scholarship support; and coordination of awards for teaching and scholarship. She will work closely with the Faculty Collaborative for Teaching Innovation.

In the Department of Political Science, she teaches public policy, research methods, and American politics and is the Director of the Program in Public Sector Studies. Her scholarship focuses on the implementation and effects of criminal justice sentencing policy, including its consequences for public safety, communities, and offenders themselves. Her most recent work on the de-escalation of mass incarceration and alternatives to punitive sentencing strategies is funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Justice.

Chen has an A.B. from Princeton, a M.P.P. from Harvard and a Ph.D. from UCLA. Prior to joining the Santa Clara faculty, Chen worked as a policy analyst in the criminal justice program at RAND.

Eileen Razzari Elrod, Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Development

eileenphotoAssociate Vice Provost for Faculty Development since Fall 2010, Dr. Elrod is a Professor of English and Women’s and Gender Studies. Her scholarly interests focus on religion, race and gender in early American literature, with a particular focus on contested notions of American identity and autobiographical writing. Her scholarly work includes refereed journal articles, book chapters and a 2008 book, Piety and Dissent: Race, Gender and Biblical Rhetoric in Early American Autobiography, (University of Massachusetts), which explores the complex work of religion in early American lifewriting. Eileen teaches early and nineteenth-century American literature, contemporary multicultural literature, women’s studies, and first-year composition.  A dedicated teacher (honored with the Brutocao Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2007), Eileen is committed to a range of pedagogical styles in pursuit of the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis with Santa Clara’s diverse faculty and student community.  Eileen has been a member of the SCU faculty since 1992, with service/leadership experience that includes the College of Arts and Sciences Rank and Tenure Committee, Faculty Affairs, the Ignatian Faculty Forum, Women Faculty Group, the LEAD program, WGST Program Council and English Department Associate Chair.
