Senior Vice Provost

Don C. Dodson is Senior Vice Provost and Professor of Communication.  As Senior Vice Provost, he has responsibilities in the areas of faculty affairs, interdisciplinary programs, research and sponsored projects, academic planning and policy development, and program review.  He supervises the Faculty Development Program; the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics; the Center for Science, Technology, and Society; the Office of Research InitiativesInternational Progams; the Assessment Office; the de Saisset Museum; and the Institutional Research Office.

Previous to holding his current administrative position, Dr. Dodson was Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (1996-2007), Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and University Planning (1991-96), Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs (1990-91), Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs (1986-90), Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs (1983-86), and Director of Research and Program Development (1981-83).  Between 1977 and 1981, he served in various positions in the Development Office at Santa Clara University.  Before coming to Santa Clara in 1977, he was an Assistant Professor of Communication at Stanford University.

Dr. Dodson also served as director of Santa Clara's year-long Institute on Globalization in 2002-03 and its 10-week Institute on Technology and Society in 1985-86.

Dr. Dodson received a B.A. in English from Haverford College (1966), an M.A. in Journalism from Stanford University (1967), an M.A. in Political Science from Northwestern University (1968), and a Ph.D. in Mass Communications from the University of Wisconsin (1974), where he also minored in African Studies.  He has published in the areas of African literature, popular culture, and mass media.
