SCU Tutor Certification

Requirements for Becoming a Certified Tutor

Students looking to become certified tutors through Santa Clara University must pass English 197: Practicum for Writig Tutors and English 190(b): Tutor Certification, a directed reading course.

Process of Certification

  1. Completion of required prerequisite coursework
  2. Completion of at least thirty hours work as a writing tutor
  3. Positive performance evaluations and the completion of a special project related to some aspect of learning or instruction, which the student will present to the larger university community

Students who complete these requirements may then apply for certification through the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA).

For more information on the CRLA, see their website: www.crla.net.

Benefits of Certification

Whether you are looking to teach abroad or are just looking for a few extra credits, becoming a certified writing tutor looks impressive on your resume and leaves you with useful critical thinking skills that will set you apart from other job candidates. Becoming a trained writing tutor allows you to:

  1. Work as a professionally certified tutor outside Santa Clara University
  2. Gain a deeper understanding of teaching-learning theory and its practical application in effective peer tutoring methods
  3. Hone your own writing abilities and develop your active listening and critical response skills
