Hello Everyone!  My name is John McCaffrey and I am a senior at Santa Clara University.  I’m majoring in Finance and minoring in Computer Science.  I grew up Pueblo, Colorado, which is about 2 hours south of Denver.  Small town Colorado has a much different feel than the hustle and bustle Bay Area; however, it is easy to find similarities between Pueblo and the Washington Neighborhood.  The Latino influence and blue collar attitude come together to form a tight-knit community with a lot of diversity and great food!

I joined this class because I want to use the concepts and skills that I have been learning in class in a way that benefits the community around me.  Working with Yolanda is a great way to use specific concepts that we have learned in our Finance and Marketing classes.  On the other hand, working with the entire business community requires knowledge of some economic theories in order to think about the big picture.

So far, my favorite part of the class has been interacting with the community.  I think we all really enjoyed touring the school.  I was impressed with the dedication displayed by everyone working at the school.  In time, a quality education for the children of the neighborhood will result in more prosperity for the entire neighborhood.  I’ve also enjoyed talking to the businesses with my partner, Megan.  I’ve never had any sort of sales job, so talking to that first business owner was daunting.  I was worried that they would react negatively, or that they might not speak English.  However, this nervousness passed quickly and I began to enjoy talking with the owners and employees.  Some of them brought up problems that I had not thought of, while others offered solutions that might have a wonderful effect on the community in the near future.

These six weeks have gone by incredibly fast.  We still need to visit a few more businesses on Willow Street and my team and I have just begun to improve Yolanda’s website and social media presence.  It’s going to be a busy few weeks, but I am excited to look back on the quarter and see everything that has been accomplished.  I also hope to stay involved with Yolanda if possible.

Thanks for reading,
John McCaffrey
