After the success of the Résumé Workshop we held for Washington Elementary’s fourth and fifth graders last spring, I decided to hold another Résumé Workshop. This time we held it specifically for the parents of students at Washington Elementary.  The plan came to fruition as Leavey School of Business students and business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi members, Francisco Pujals, Sofia Wang, Moses Nerio, Hector Lopez and I spent the morning of November 2nd in the Washington library.  The workshop, presented and held entirely in Spanish, proved extremely helpful for the parents, both for themselves and for the résumés they will help their children create for their middle school applications.

None of the parents at the workshop had any previous experience creating a résumé, so we started from scratch.  We taught them the purpose, uses and parts of a résumé.  Afterward, we broke into small groups to write their individual résumés by hand.  We focused on the translation of the mothers’ work volunteering at Washington Elementary through Madre a Madre into tangible skills and experience in leadership, event planning and event execution in order to show them that their work has value.  Once created, we moved to the computers to type them up and print out.  By the end, each workshop attendee had their very own résumé (currículum vitae) in Spanish! The parents were extremely proud of the end products, a tangible representation of their work, experience and skills over the years.

As always, it was a pleasure to volunteer at Washington Elementary and work with the incredible residents of the Washington community.  I am planning several other activities and workshops with the students at Washington over the course of this academic year, so please do not hesitate to reach out if you would like to volunteer!
