Santa Clara University School of Law Hosts Patent-Law Conference Oct. 14Friday, Oct. 7, 2011Speakers include NPR’s Laura Sydell, Stanford’s Mark Lemley, and SCU’s Colleen Chien SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 7, 2011 — Santa Clara University School of Law's High Tech Law Institute will host an all-day academic conference Oct. 14 entitled "Defense 2.0: New Strategies for Reducing Patent Risk", co-sponsored with the UC Berkeley Center for Law & Technology. The conference, being held from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m Oct. 14, is expected to bring together about 200 members of the Silicon Valley patent-law community. It will be held at the Paul L. Locatelli, S.J., Student Activity Center at Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053. The conference will explore new strategies for small and large companies to defend against the growing number of patent technology lawsuits brought by competitors as well as “patent trolls.” Although Congress recently passed patent reform, many feel that it has not significantly changed the patent exposure faced by technology companies. Come hear leaders of small and large companies, academics, and leaders in the field discuss such topics as defensive portfolio building; how to make trolls go away; and using data to manage patent risks.
