Santa Clara University School of Law Hosts Patent-Law Conference Oct. 14

Friday, Oct. 7, 2011

Speakers include NPR’s Laura Sydell, Stanford’s Mark Lemley, and SCU’s Colleen Chien

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 7, 2011 — Santa Clara University School of Law's High Tech Law Institute will host an all-day academic conference Oct. 14 entitled "Defense 2.0: New Strategies for Reducing Patent Risk", co-sponsored with the UC Berkeley Center for Law & Technology.

The conference, being held from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m Oct. 14, is expected to bring together about 200 members of the Silicon Valley patent-law community. It will be held at the Paul L. Locatelli, S.J., Student Activity Center at Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95053.

The conference will explore new strategies for small and large companies to defend against the growing number of patent technology lawsuits brought by competitors as well as “patent trolls.” Although Congress recently passed patent reform, many feel that it has not significantly changed the patent exposure faced by technology companies.

Come hear leaders of small and large companies, academics, and leaders in the field discuss such topics as defensive portfolio building; how to make trolls go away; and using data to manage patent risks.

Featured speakers will include:

*Laura Sydell, digital culture correspondent at NPR; contributor to “This American Life" and the recent show "When Patents Attack"
*Colleen Chien, professor of U.S. and international patent law, Santa Clara University School of Law
*Mark Lemley Director, Stanford Program in Law, Science and Technology
*Joff Wild, editor of Intellectual Asset Management magazine

 Other speakers include:

*Jason Schultz, Peter Menell and Robert Barr, professors, UC Berkeley School of Law
*Mallun Yen, Executive VP, RPX Corp.
*Josh Walker, Chairman and co-founder, Lex Machina
*In-house legal representatives from Twitter, Intel, H-P, SAP, Cisco, Ovidian, and Aruba Networks.
