National Science Foundation grant encourages more undergraduates to pursue teaching careers in mathematics and scienceMonday, Sep. 15, 2008SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 15 -- The National Science Foundation, through the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program, has recently awarded Santa Clara University a five-year grant of $750,000, which will nearly double the number of Santa Clara University graduates pursuing teaching careers in science and mathematics each year. The grant will enable "This grant responds to a critical need for highly qualified science and mathematics teachers, particularly in high-need school districts. It provides significant financial incentives to SCU undergraduates who decide to pursue a career as a science or mathematics teacher. It also allows SCU to strengthen and deepen the links between our undergraduate programs, our fifth-year teacher credential program, and our local school districts," said Dennis Smithenry, who is an assistant professor of education at The implementation of the NSF grant will draw upon a strong partnership that has developed between the two local districts, ESUHSD and SJUSD, and a collaborative team at SCU that brings together faculty from the education, science, math, and engineering departments. The scholarships will pay for most of the tuition and fees associated with earning a teaching credential from the Department of Education’s fifth-year post-baccalaureate program. Eligible candidates for the first round of eight scholarships will be required to complete a formal application for the SCU Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship during the winter 2009 quarter.
