National Science Foundation grant encourages more undergraduates to pursue teaching careers in mathematics and science

Monday, Sep. 15, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 15 -- The National Science Foundation, through the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program, has recently awarded Santa Clara University a five-year grant of $750,000, which will nearly double the number of Santa Clara University graduates pursuing teaching careers in science and mathematics each year.

The grant will enable Santa Clara University’s Department of Education to offer $25,000 scholarships to 24 science, mathematics and engineering majors committed to becoming science or mathematics teachers at the middle school or high school level. In exchange for receiving this grant, Noyce Teacher Scholars will be required to teach at least two years in a high-need school in either the East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD) or the San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD).

"This grant responds to a critical need for highly qualified science and mathematics teachers, particularly in high-need school districts. It provides significant financial incentives to SCU undergraduates who decide to pursue a career as a science or mathematics teacher. It also allows SCU to strengthen and deepen the links between our undergraduate programs, our fifth-year teacher credential program, and our local school districts," said Dennis Smithenry, who is an assistant professor of education at Santa Clara University and the grant’s principal investigator.

The implementation of the NSF grant will draw upon a strong partnership that has developed between the two local districts, ESUHSD and SJUSD, and a collaborative team at SCU that brings together faculty from the education, science, math, and engineering departments. The scholarships will pay for most of the tuition and fees associated with earning a teaching credential from the Department of Education’s fifth-year post-baccalaureate program. Eligible candidates for the first round of eight scholarships will be required to complete a formal application for the SCU Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship during the winter 2009 quarter.
