SCU and Sacred Heart Parish host eighth annual Lady of Guadalupe celebration

Monday, Nov. 29, 2004

Santa Clara, Calif., Nov 30, 2004 - Santa Clara University and Sacred Heart Parish in San Jose are collaborating to celebrate the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe in a dramatic musical performance on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. in the Mission Santa Clara de Asis.

Teatro Corazon of Sacred Heart Parish, along with SCU students, will perform the “Virgen de Tepeyac,” which tells the story of Juan Diego, the man to whom the Lady of Guadalupe appeared in December 1531. He brought news of her appearance to the local bishop, along with her wish that he build a church to honor her. The performance will be primarily in Spanish with some English commentary.

Attendees at the event will also meet the recipient of the Juan Diego scholarship. Veronica Lugo-Perez is a graduate of a charter high school in San Jose, the Downtown College Preparatory’s first graduating class, and is the first in her family to attend college.

The San Juan Diego Scholarship is a four-year full tuition scholarship to Santa Clara University. Established in 1998, the scholarship is awarded each year to a student from Sacred Heart Parish or the parish neighborhood community who demonstrates leadership and community service that reflect Christian values, social justice, and equal opportunity.
