New dean of admissions appointed

Friday, May. 18, 2001

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- May 18, 2001 - Santa Clara University today announced the appointment of Sandra Hayes as dean of undergraduate admissions effective July 1. For the past year, Hayes, a San Jose resident who is a former director of financial aid at the 7,350-student University, has been acting dean.

She had been nominated by a faculty-staff search committee after a nationwide search.

Hayes joined the University in 1989 as a financial aid counselor, was named director of financial aid in 1994, and served in that role until she was appointed acting dean of admissions in July 2000. As dean of undergraduate admissions, she will oversee a recruitment, application, and counseling process that enrolls approximately1,025 SCU freshmen each year.

The Tennessee native received her bachelor's degree in speech pathology and audiology from Boston University, and a master's in student personnel services from Upsala College in East Orange, N.J.

"My excitement about this leadership opportunity is connected to the challenge of creating a vision for the recruitment and enrollment process that will engage not just the undergraduate admissions staff but the entire university community in the work and ownership of our mission," said Hayes.

In announcing her appointment this week, President Paul Locatelli, S.J., praised Hayes for nurturing links with deans, alumni, marketing, information technology, student advisers and financial aid. He said that under her leadership, undergraduate admissions "continued the trend of increasing both the talent and the numbers of students applying to Santa Clara… individuals who will be academically motivated, bright, engaged, and diverse."
