Grand Reunion For More Than 1,000 SCU Alumni

Thursday, Sep. 24, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 24, 2009 – More than 1,000 Santa Clara University alumni from all over the country are expected to flock to the Silicon Valley campus in three weeks, taking part in Santa Clara University’s Grand Reunion weekend.

In all, more than 1,500 alumni, family, and friends are expected to attend the four-day event, being held on the SCU campus from October 15 to 18, 2009. While the university has held annual homecomings or reunions since at least 1881, this is only the fourth time in recent history the University has tried to gather ten classes at once for the celebration.

Attendees are invited to participate in back-to-back courses, events, or parties over the span of the weekend. Already proving to be popular are a career-oriented workshop on How to Navigate a Difficult Job Market; Prof.  Fred Parrella’s course Will Love and Marriage Survive in a Postmodern World; various class parties, and a 5K Bronco run/walk. There will also be a homecoming picnic, campus, residence hall, and library tours, a golf tournament, sporting events, networking opportunities, and more.

In addition, the President’s Speaker Series program will kick off that weekend, with a speech on October 15 by Janet Napolitano, ’79, Secretary of Homeland Security. The topic of her speech, in the Mayer Theatre at 7:30 p.m., is “Homeland Security in a Networked Age.” Further information is available at http://www.scu.edu/visitors/2010speakers/napolitano.cfm.

“This Grand Reunion is one of our most ambitious and inclusive events to date,” said Kathryn Kale ’86, executive director of the Santa Clara University Alumni Association. “We’ve filled the weekend with a variety of events and activities to ensure that everyone from the class of 1929 to the class of 2009 can remember, reconnect, and renew their commitment and family ties to SCU.”

“Our alumni are well-known for their loyalty to SCU and for maintaining close friendships with one another for decades,” said Jim Purcell, vice president for university relations. “The gusto with which they’ve embraced this Grand Reunion is just further evidence of what makes the SCU family so special.”

While open to all graduates, the Grand Reunion has special events planned for 10 classes of Broncos, those who graduated from SCU in the years ending in ’4 or in ’9. Also, events are planned for the Ruff Riders, who are celebrating their 10th year as a group, for past immersion-trip participants, and for past rugby and football players.

Law School alumni and those marking their 50th anniversary will continue to celebrate separately in September.
