Santa Clara University to Welcome Class of 2014

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Sept. 16, 2010 – They’re young, smart, and diverse, and they’re ready to begin the next challenging chapter of their lives. On Sept. 20, some 1,300 freshman students will begin their college career at Santa Clara University, one of the top universities in the country, according U.S. News & World Report, Princeton Review, and Forbes.

For the fourth year in a row, SCU experienced a record number of applications totaling 11,788, an increase of 15 percent from the year before. Of the applicants, 7,100 came from California alone.

SCU’s Class of 2014 come from diverse backgrounds and a strong academic standing. Of the 1,316 students who were admitted, 60 percent are from California and 37.4 percent are from 36 states, including Hawaii, New York, and Texas. International students make 2.6 percent and come from China, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe to name a few.

The class has an average grade point average of 3.6, with 87 students holding a perfect 4.0 GPA. The class also has an average SAT (critical reading and math) score of 1243 and an ACT composite score of 27.7, both higher than the last year’s freshman class.

In addition to the increase in applicants, the most unexpected increase happened in SCU’s School of Engineering with 277 students or 21 percent admitted, the largest number in five years. The College of Arts and Sciences as well as the Leavey School of Business continue to attract their usual enrollment levels, representing 65 percent and 22 percent respectively.
