Residential Learning Communities

ALPHA RLC

ALPHA is Santa Clara University’s longest-running Residential Learning Community and was the first RLC to bring students in a single residence together with some of the University’s finest professors in interconnected Core Curriculum courses. As an ALPHA student, you’ll have the opportunity to live and learn with other students interested in the humanities as you fulfill the Western Culture component of the Core through your choice of course sequences in the disciplines that make up its name—Art History, Literature, Philosophy, History—or in the Western Culture option, Performance and Culture.

Work in these and other courses is supplemented by co-curricular opportunities outside of class. Over the years ALPHA students have debated morality and ethics, engaged in lively political debate, and served beyond campus as tutors for marginalized communities with underfunded educational resources. ALPHA regularly offers popular one-unit courses on independent international films. ALPHA is also famous for its Monday afternoon socials, in which students and faculty share conversation and refreshments, and for its annual Mr. ALPHA contest. Through these and other social, academic, cultural, wellness, and spiritual programs, ALPHA seeks both to develop community and to meet the needs of each individual.
