The Jill Curran Retail Studies Scholarship from the heart... - by Colleen Carr '07

Jill Curran - New York City
The Jill Curran Retail Studies Scholarship Awards both honor and remember beloved Santa Clara student Jill Curran, Class of 2004. Jill passed away in the fall of 2002 while studying fashion retailing, marketing, and organizational behavior with Syracuse University’s Study Abroad Program in London. Established by her family and friends at Santa Clara to honor Jill’s devotion to her studies in Retail Management and to honor a special love she had for New York City, these awards truly celebrate Jill’s enthusiasm and spirit. Even at the age of 20, she possessed a mature character that her friends admired. As one of them recalls, “Her love for life and her contagiously happy spirit have always inspired me so much. I have never met someone as strong-willed and positive as Jilly Bean in all my life.”
As a marketing major in the Leavey School of Business, Jill found a match for her creativity and shrewd business sense in the RMI program. When her father began a long-term business
John and Judy Curran announced the Jill Curran Retail Studies Scholarship at the 2004 RMI graduation in June.

project for Ernst and Young in New York, Jill visited the city regularly and discovered her fascination with its vibrancy. The exciting, fast pace of New York and emphasis on creativity that epitomizes the retail industry truly capture Jill’s spirit and ambition. Fortunately, this spirit will be honored with these awards, which provide an opportunity for up to four students in the Santa Clara Retail Studies Program to attend the National Retail Federation Convention and Expo in New York City. When the selected students attend the convention, they will certainly think of Jill as she serves as inspiration to us all.
