RMI Board Member Shannon Buscho invites RMI students to CORO Leadership Luncheon - by Javier Gutierrez ‘06

RMI students with RMI Board Member Shannon Buscho at the CORO Leadership Luncheon.
Students in RMI often receive special invitations to events or activities that provide an opportunity to learn more about a specific organization. Many times these are related to what we are learning in our classes, or to where we might go for our internship or career; they are often opportunities to learn more about business or retail. However, an RMI board member, Shannon Buscho, and her husband invited a group of students to see and learn more about a different type of organization.

On April 29 eight SCU students in the Retail Management program joined the couple at their table for the CORO* Leadership Luncheon. The room was full mainly of business professionals who support the organization, as well as those who help run it. However, the focus was on the program itself and those whom it has served. CORO is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1942 to “strengthen communities by providing public affairs leadership training to groups of diverse individuals at different points of their professional development.”

At the luncheon, several graduates of the program spoke of their experiences and how their futures had been affected by it. Through a 10-week program, the high-schoolers received new hope and visions about their opportunities in the future. By participating in team-building experiences, interviews with local leaders, and internships they learned how to be active citizens and how they can make a positive difference. There is also a nine-month, full-time, graduate-level program during which participants are actually involved in nine different areas of public affairs. They also complete a more in-depth series of internships, projects, and interviews with community leaders so that they may become better leaders themselves.

The correlations between Santa Clara University and this CORO organization are the focus on leadership and the focus on being involved in helping a diverse community make a positive difference. This was an opportunity to learn more about how this great organization helps others and how we can get involved in the future. It was also nice for the students to chat with Shannon Buscho about RMI, her career, and her involvement with CORO. Even in the fast world of retail, there should always be time to slow down and help bring others up.
