RMI Awards Scholarships to Outstanding Student Scholars
by Colleen Carr and Jacinth Meskers '07

Maria Vesce and family share in the Scholarship ceremony by awarding the Joseph C. Vesce Memorial Scholarship to RMI student Javier Gutierrez '06.
Developing future retail leaders took a significant step forward this year with the awarding of merit and need-based scholarships totaling $35,000 to 10 outstanding RMI student scholars. Continued generosity has fostered immense growth for the RMI Scholarship program.

The Jill Curran Retail Management Scholarship Awards both honor and remember beloved Santa Clara student Jill Curran, Class of 2004. Jill passed away in the fall of 2002 while studying fashion retailing, marketing, and organizational behavior with Syracuse University's Study Abroad Program in London.

Established by her family and friends at Santa Clara to honor Jill's devotion to her studies in Retail Management and to honor a special love she had for New York City, these awards truly celebrate Jill's enthusiasm and spirit. They provide an opportunity for up to four students in the Retail Studies Program to attend the National Retail Federation Convention and Expo in New York City. The 2005-2006 Jill Curran Scholarships went to Andréa Graziosi, Jessica Travis, and Michael Vincent.

The John F. and Marguerite Kilmartin Scholarship was awarded to seniors Andréa Graziosi and Mallorie Kumpf. The Howard and Mary Lester endowed scholarships were given to seniors Jessica Nicolas, Michael Vincent and Diane Snodgrass. Senior Javier Gutierrez received the Joseph C. Vesce Memorial Scholarship, and senior Kevin Teh earned the Mervyns Scholarship.

The RMI Alumni Association Scholarship, chaired by RMI alumnae and advisory board member Mark Brashear '83, was awarded to junior Lauren Martinez.

This is the fifth year the Jack F. Kilmartin, Ellen Magnin Newman and Philip S. Schlein endowed scholarships were given. These three scholarships, which were created to acknowledge the dedication of these founding board members, were awarded to seniors Jessica Nicolas, Andréa Graziosi and Mallorie Kumpf respectively.

The Achabal family scholarship, created by Dale Achabal, director of the RMI program, was given to junior Colleen Carr. Junior Lauren Martinez received the Strategic Mindshare Scholarship.

The annual ceremony during which these scholarships were awarded honored the efforts and accomplishments of the graduating RMI seniors, as well as paid tribute to the generosity of RMI supporters. The financial support of these benefactors greatly expands the range of opportunities available to RMI students, and for this, they are undoubtedly grateful.
