The Gap Tour - by Rachael Fairbairn '05

Retail Studies students enjoy a day in San Francisco while visiting Gap, Inc. headquarters.
On January 14, 2005, a group of Santa Clara Retail Management students had the opportunity to visit the corporate headquarters of Gap, Inc. in San Francisco. Davidson Young, Gap’s new college recruiter, led our tour and taught us what it is like to work at one of the world’s largest specialty retailers.

When we first arrived at Gap, Inc. we were impressed by the building itself, especially all of the great pieces of modern art in the lobby. The company’s casual work environment was immediately apparent when we noticed the majority of employees wearing jeans. We were welcomed into the conference room with an introduction by Shannon Buscho, SVP of planning and distribution for Old Navy and SCU alumna.

The day began with Gap’s 35th anniversary video, which showed how Gap, Inc. has evolved over the years. Next, we heard from a panel of young employees, including Jennifer Bernaz, BernaDette Ja’Net, and Dan Vu. They informed us about what they do at Gap, Inc. and why they love working there. Each expressed their love for the challenging atmosphere and the fun and casual work environment. They explained the product life cycle at Gap, Inc. and we learned how clothing goes from inspiration to the store. We were able to experience the challenges of having a job as a planner by deciding which item would have sold the best. They showed us three Old Navy women’s sweaters and we had to rank them in order of most popular. When we were wrong we realized how challenging it is to predict consumer buyer behavior.

Later, we had the opportunity to have lunch at their café. It was an interesting experience to see the faces of Gap, Inc. and how everyone interacts with one another. Our day concluded with a tour of the art gallery in Gap’s headquarters. The RSSA students learned more about what it is like to work in retail and all of the exciting opportunities available at Gap, Inc.
