RSSA Holiday Gift-Giving Event - by Laura Brennan '05

As we all had many things to be thankful for at the end of the past year, we decided to bring holiday cheer to some of our less fortunate neighbors.

This past November, the Community Outreach Committee of the Retail Studies Student Association organized its annual gift-giving event. Following in the tradition of many past years, the students of the RSSA joined together to donate gifts to a local charity. This year, we gave educationally based gifts to the children of a homeless shelter in downtown San Jose. The Community Homeless Alliance Ministry (CHAM) at the First Christian Church on South 5th Street supports the poor and homeless of the Bay Area, where the cost of living is so high. Santa Clara Community Action Program has a long standing relationship with the families who live at the shelter and aid in many activities throughout the year. Through this connection, the RSSA received a list of some of the gifts that could help supply the playroom at the shelter. With the generous donations of RMI, sponsors and other organizations, a few members of our committee were able to buy nearly $300 in gifts from Target. On November 30, RSSA members came bearing gifts of their own to donate and we all worked together to wrap the presents and share the holiday spirit. As we listened to Christmas carols and drank eggnog, our students wrapped puzzles, games and art supplies for the kids at CHAM.

Realizing that some of these children may not receive gifts during the holiday season if not for our effort was gratifying. Giving something back to our community is so important and helps us to appreciate how much we have to be grateful for. We hope that your holiday season was bright and that 2005 has brought you much health and happiness.
