Last summer, I was fortunate to have the unique opportunity to travel to Hawaii and participate in DFS Hawaii’s Internship Program. This rotational program exposed me to the unique retail operations of the Waikiki Galleria store. Each intern was paired with an assistant store manager whom they shadowed and partnered with on a special project. Upon completion of the project, I prepared and presented my specific impact on the business in a capstone presentation to senior level managers.
The internship exposed me to many retail functions such as visual merchandising, logistics, loss prevention, divisional merchandise management, and customer service. In addition, we traveled to the airport stores and warehouse to experience first-hand how DFS’s duty-free business operates. Some of my favorite activities included traveling to DFS’s private label chocolate factory and competitive shopping at Ala Moana Center’s luxury boutiques.
When I was not learning about DFS and its unique business operations, I spent my days off exploring the island of Oahu. Some of the highlights of my stay in Hawaii included visiting Pearl Harbor, hiking to the top of Diamond Head Crater, and visiting the North Shore. One friendly DFS employee even invited me to her home for a family barbeque.
Living in Hawaii and working for DFS was an incredible experience but ultimately, it was the company’s wonderful people and unique culture that made my internship unforgettable!.
