Build Your Retail Network
by Josh Shumsky ’08

Mervyn’s recruiter discuss job opportunities with Carissa Alcantar ’08.
Fall is an exciting time for the Retail Studies Student Association (RSSA) as we reconnect with old friends as well as usher in the new generation of incoming members.

The Retail Management Program prides itself not only on its connections with numerous retailers, but also on its ability to share those connections with its students in the historically successful practice of integrating RSSA members with the retail community.

The first opportunity of the 2007-2008 school year for students to truly take advantage of these networking opportunities was the RSSA “Meet the Retailers” event held on the evening of Thursday, October 4 in the California Mission room, located inside the Benson Center. This event was held directly following the campus-wide career fair that was conducted on the lawn between the Leavey School of Business and the Benson Center. Students were able to talk with many of the retailers during the day, but the evening provided a more intimate and more productive environment for students to interact with these well-known and desirable companies.

Retailers came with a purpose. Their purpose was to meet Santa Clara students. This was easily observed by the engaging conversations held between a corporate recruiter and RSSA student. It took but one look around the crowded room to see that true networking was taking place.

And it was easy to see what the buzz was all about. With over 15 retailers present, and names like Nordstrom, OSH, and Accenture, the possibilities were endless. Discussions ranged from general information for freshmen and sophomores, to internship programs and criteria for juniors, all the way to permanent careers and job offers for seniors.

Furthermore, it was a chance to add members to the Retail Management program. The event was advertised through flyers, word of mouth, and through an e-mail sent by RMI President Jaclyn Oldenburg to all freshmen through junior students of the business school. These marketing efforts paid off, which was made evident by the high attendance and high sign-up rates for non RMI members who, as a result of this “Meet the Retailers” event, had adopted an interest in the RSSA and the Retail Management program.

This year’s “Meet the Retailers” event was a huge success. The retailers were engaging and the students were inquisitive. Networks were built and business cards were handed out. Recruiters were able to meet, face-to-face, those students that they would be recruiting in the late fall and winter. In conclusion, the members of the RSSA executive board worked hard to put this opportunity together for our members, and it was incredible to see the overwhelmingly positive response and extraordinary retailer turnout for this year’s kick-off event.
