Nordstrom Panel Visits Students - By Natalie Warga '03

Nordstrom executives in Dr. Kirby's Marketing 181 class talk about the Nordstrom philosophy of customer service.
On October 31, 2001, a panel of four Nordstrom executives visited Professor Kirby's Marketing class. Ted Reed, Store Manager; Don Martin, Men's Shoe Buyer; Melanie Muters, Assistant Buyer; and Lauren Nye, Regional Department Manager, collectively expressed their passion for retail and their satisfaction to be affiliated with the preeminent retailer, Nordstrom.

All four guests began their Nordstrom careers in the stores as Sales Associates. Their time spent on the sales floor enabled them to learn about and provide the key component of the Nordstrom philosophy: customer service. They noted that Nordstrom employees are unique because they are empowered to exercise their ability and freedom to make effective decisions in order to exceed the customers expectations. These four individuals exemplified Nordstrom's strong belief of promoting from within. Nordstrom has allowed them to grow and learn by serving in various roles in the company.

The Nordstrom executives enthusiastically stated many times how much they enjoy their creative and challenging jobs. They shared their excitement for retail with the class and opened students' eyes to the various job opportunities available in the retail industry.
