On May 1, a group of RSSA students enjoyed a fascinating introduction and orientation to the new Nordstrom store at Valley Fair. It was a great opportunity to have a behind the scenes look at Nordstrom's daily operations. Our visit began with a comprehensive store tour led by Public Relations Representative, Deniz Anders, and College Recruiter, Marci Rainey. They explained how the various departments are set up similar to independent boutiques, catering to the unique needs of customers with a variety of lifestyles.
After the tour, we watched a video which introduced us to the history of Nordstrom. Originally established as a shoe store in Seattle, the business eventually branched out to market clothes and accessories nationwide. It was interesting to note that the shoe department consistently remains the most profitable store department. We had the chance to ask questions when a panel of guest speakers from various departments spoke to us, including the Northern California Regional Manager and Vice-President, Vicki McWilliams. They discussed their job responsibilities and all stressed the importance of customer service as a key component of the Nordstrom philosophy. These individuals all had positive things to say about their affiliation with the company.
Eryn Holl, a RMI member and marketing major, found it interesting that Nordstrom promotes from within, allowing their employees to grow by assuming different responsibilities. Overall, it was an intriguing experience to see the new store, to learn more about Nordstrom, and to talk to Nordstrom employees about their retail careers.
