An Update from RSSA President - By Mariela Hurleyi '01

The Retail Studies Student Association has been very busy Fall and Winter quarter. Through our annual fall recruiting BBQ and other campus events we have experienced tremendous growth in membership. We have a large sophomore and junior class this year, and juniors are beginning to prepare for their internship interviews in April. Recently we put together a compilation of senior resumes that was sent out to potential employers.

As part of our process to become more visible on campus we have designed the RMI coffee tumbler to use as a marketing tool for RSSA. Through generous donations of several companies the tumbler features RMI and the donating retailer’s logos. It has been distributed to all of our students, who use it to buy their coffee on campus.

One of our goals throughout the year is to coordinate activities with different retailers by setting up headquarter tours. To date we have taken a tour of Gap Inc. in San Francisco, California. We were honored to spend the morning with them listening to several key speakers throughout the company, including several RMI alumni. This winter the students will be traveling to San Francisco again to visit the corporate offices of Duty Free Stores and the new Nordstroms Valley Fair store.

Another goal is the launching of our own RSSA web site. The site will feature information for our current student’s as well perspective students. Currently the site is under construction and will be launched by the spring quarter. Through the site we hope to gain more exposure and recognition throughout the SCU campus. Watch for more news about RSSA at then end of spring quarter!
