This spring, Eileen Corrigan ('02) and I participated in the Junior Achievement Elementary School Program. Junior Achievement Inc. is a non-profit organization financed by businesses, foundations, and individuals. The purpose of Junior Achievement is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business, and economics to improve the quality of their lives. Since its founding in 1919, Junior Achievement has contributed to the business and economics education of young people in the United States and throughout the world.
Eileen and I volunteered at Forrest Hill Elementary School in Campbell, CA in a first grade class. The main theme of the program at the first grade level is "Our Families," which involves identifying what a family is and how family members work together. We also taught the students what families need and want, where they can get their needs and wants met, and what types of jobs family members hold.

We visited the class each Monday for five weeks and taught a half-hour lesson each time. Junior Achievement provides a complete lesson plan and materials, which makes the volunteering process simple and rewarding. The students in our class were eager to learn and enjoyed having us there. The teacher, Mrs. Lubbs, did an excellent job keeping the class disciplined while we led the students with the specified activity. From our short lessons, the students picked up valuable information that they can use as they progress through school and that they can share with their friends and family. Eileen and I have both had a memorable experience and plan on volunteering in the future!
