RMI Awards Scholarships to Outstanding Student Scholars

Smriti Khanna '04.
The RMI scholarship program has progressed immensely over the past few years. Last year 7 RMI students received scholarships based on merit and need, however, this year a total of $46,500 enabled 18 RMI students to receive scholarships. On June 13, family, friends and faculty joined to celebrate the graduating RMI class of 2003. During this annual ceremony the scholarships for the 2003-2004 academic year were awarded to the 18 RMI students. The scholarships are provided by individuals and corporations who have supported the RMI program annually.

The John F. & Marguerite Kilmartin Scholarship was awarded to two juniors, Laura Brennan and Carlie Brown and four seniors, Kacey Denton, Stella Palileo, Carin Posedel and Shiloh Uhlir. Second year recipient Shiloh Uhlir says, “The RMI scholarship helps to make my education at Santa Clara University possible. Without the generosity of the RMI alumni and supporters, some of us would not be here. Thank you!”

The Howard & Mary Lester Scholarships were given to junior Andrew Dapprich and seniors Mario Diaz, Stanley Ho, Briana Martini and Alicia Wheeler. Senior Alicia Wheeler says, “The RMI scholarship program is amazing! The Scholarship Committee must devote hours to collecting and distributing scholarships. This program helps make my education at Santa Clara possible. I am so grateful for all of the time and effort. Thank you.”

Several RMI scholarship recipients for 2003-2004.
The RMI Alumni Association Scholarship, chaired by RMI alumnus and advisory board member Mark Brashear ’83, was awarded to senior Trisha Tomokiyo. Two seniors, Kelly Alexander and Patricia Tran received the Western Association of Food Chains Scholarship. The Joseph C. Vesce Memorial Scholarship was awarded to junior Erica Paul and senior Jennifer Chiang.

This is the third year that the Jack Kilmartin, Ellen Magnin Newman and Philip S. Schlein endowed scholarships were given. These three scholarships were created to acknowledge the dedication, time and effort of these founding board members. Senior Smriti Khanna was awarded both the Kilmartin and Schlein scholarships. The Newman award was given to Dzung Duong.

This year we were very lucky to have two new scholarships awarded. Dale Achabal, director of the RMI program, created the Achabal Family Scholarship that was given to senior Trisha Tomokiyo. As well the YMA (Young Menswear Association) Scholarship was awarded to senior Smriti Khanna. Charla Davis was the Wal-Mart Scholarship recipient

This annual ceremony honored the efforts and accomplishments of the graduating RMI seniors, but also paid tribute to the generosity of RMI supporters. As seniors Shiloh Uhlir and Alicia Wheeler said, without the financial support of these benefactors, the opportunities for RMI students would not be possible. Due to the increasing scholarship support, RMI is able to thoroughly prepare students for the retail business world.
