Strategic Mindshare Foundation

Scholarship awarded to Retail Studies student, Leila Motamedi.
Strategic Mindshare Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation, was created to support and guide young women interested in building their professional careers in business through scholarship and mentoring programs. The foundation was conceived by Cynthia Cohen, President of Strategic Mindshare, a strategy consulting firm. Cynthia recognized a need to help young women in their pursuit of a successful career in business. She has been involved in mentoring activities since the early 1990s when she realized the importance of her mentoring relationships in advancing the careers of her young women business mentees. Cynthia believes there is a need for women to be mentored, as there are fewer role models in business schools and the work place. A 1996 study of business women showed that 81% of the participants saw mentoring as being either critical or fairly important to their career advancement. Cynthia sought to find a way to expand mentoring to more young women nationally, and as a result, the Strategic Mindshare Foundation was created.

The foundation has two major programs. The first is the scholarship program designed to provide financial support so that women business students can pursue a quality education. In 2002, the foundation granted seven scholarships, one of which was awarded to Retail Studies student, Leila Motamedi, a sophomore at Santa Clara University.

The second is the mentoring program designed to match successful businesswomen in the local communities with either undergraduate juniors and seniors, or MBA candidates. The mentees and mentors are carefully screened and matched according to the mentees’ personal and professional interests. This year’s program includes students from four educational institutions across the country. If you are interested in more information about the foundation, please go to their website.
