			<title>The Bridge Meets Professor Jimenez</title>

					<description>&lt;p&gt;Tuesday, February 19, 2008, the families involved in the After School Tutoring Progam called &lt;em&gt;The Bridge &lt;/em&gt;met with Professsor Francisco Jimenez to share their life stories.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dr. Cheryl McElvain is the program director who began this tutoring program 1 1/2 years ago along with her husband Larry who is the executive director of Discovery Counseling Center.&amp;nbsp; The mission of T&lt;em&gt;he Bridge&lt;/em&gt; prgram is to connect disconnected, disenfranchised English learngers and their parents into a vital learning community.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The McElvains and thir crew of volunteers work 2 days per week empowering the children trhough dialogues of critical reflection that are gournded in respect, trust and affirmation.&amp;nbsp; Dr. McElvain states, &amp;quot;These children come to our program being able to read the world.&amp;nbsp; We give them the skills to read the word.&amp;nbsp; Through dialogue we connect their world with literacy strategies that they can use in school.&amp;nbsp; As we listen to their life stories, we demonstrate respect for their language and culture which increases their motivation to learn at school and within their community.&amp;quot;&lt;/p&gt;</description>
