El Salvador Immersion Trip

The Justice and the Arts El Salvador Immersion Trip took place during Spring Break 2008 and was the first immersion experience designed for students, staff and faculty of the arts. Through contact with remarkable culture and history of the people of El Salvador, students learned about the ways in which art creates a space for expression and communication, serves as a mode of community building and becomes a catalyst for change. How the artistic process assists in the creation of effective solidarity and what arts relationship is to human development were central questions for the group.

Faculty members Aldo Billingslea (Department of Theatre and Dance) and Renee Billingslea (Department of Art) mentored the students during a planning process throughout winter quarter, accompanied the students on the trip and served as guides for the post-immersion trip reflection. The student artists on the trip developed ways to share the experience of the trip with the SCU community.

Artists’ Roundtable: Music and the Unhoused (Winter)

Guests Nancy Wait-Kromm (Chair, Music Department) and Matt Hammer (Executive Director, PACT) looked at the Beatitude Mass through the lens of justice and the arts and how composer Henry Mollicone addressed homelessness in his choral and orchestral work. The presentation included the many ways in which PACT functions to unite grassroots organizations to work on other issues, such as education and healthcare, as well as the responsibility of artists working in solidarity with marginalized communities.

A presentation of Mark McGregor’s award-winning film, “Posada” on accompanied immigrant children and the Christmas Posada tradition of welcoming outsiders. Panelists included Ana Maria Pineda, Shannan Wilber and Rebecca Fox-Bivona.

Guest panelists Judith Dunbar and Claudia McIsaacs (English Department), David Pace (Art/Art History Department) shared the process of developing their artistry and pedagogy in light of issues of social justice.

Fr. Antonio & Baobab

Throughout the week, Fr. Antonio visited local elementary schools to give presentations on Africa and oversee children’s art exchange between Bay Area elementary schools and schools in Togo and Benin. He also gave a lecture, “Thirst: How to Dig a Well,” in Kennedy Commons and in Rachel Bundang’s “Faith, Justice and Poverty” class. Furthermore, Fr. Antonio spoke to Santa Clarans for Social Justice and the CyPhi RLC and also led a liturgy for the Loyola RLC. A community member attending these events graciously donated a sum which will enable Fr. Antonio to build the first ever school room in his area of the country.
