UGRD Engineering '37
Bill Adams '37 writes with news about the Class of 1937 Endowed Scholarship. Started during the 1986-87 school year, the fund has provided more than $370,000 in scholarships over the years in five categories: arts and humanities, social and natural sciences, business, engineering, and intercollegiate athletics.

Adams, William "Bill"
William "Bill" J. Adams ’37 was selected as a School of Engineering Centennial Award recipient for a lifetime of contributions, furthering not only the engineering profession, but the School of Engineering at Santa Clara as well. Other prestigious awards he has received include the Nobili Medal, the School of Engineering’s Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award, induction into the Silicon Valley Engineering Council Hall of Fame, and honorary membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers—an award that recognizes a lifetime of service to engineering. He holds 12 U.S. and 15 foreign patents. He and his wife, Marijane, also created a scholarship fund to help SCU mechanical engineering students with financial need and to fund research fellowships.

John Smurda '46 reports that his grandson, Matthew J. Smurda '07 and Emily Sultan '07 were married in Hawaii last July. Matt is in his last year at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

UGRD Arts & Sciences '49
Donald E. Sullivan ’49 has retired at the age of 82 after serving the community of Gridley, Calif., as a family practice physician for 52 years. Dr. Sullivan graduated from Creighton University Medical School after attending SCU. In addition to tending to his medical practice for 52 years, he also served as Chief of Staff on several occasions at the local hospital and served on the high school board for 20 years. He was named Man of the Year by the Gridley Chamber of Commerce and subsequently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Chamber. The community held a retirement reception for Dr. Sullivan on November 29, which was attended by over 150 patients, community and family members.

Joseph A. Rechenmacher '49, in September 2011, received a certificate of appreciation for 52 years of service from the state of California’s Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists. Rechenmacher is the son-in-law of a 105-year-old member of the Catala Club, Winnie Hook.

Harry Wenberg '50 has been residing Saratoga for 34 years with wife Jean. He is in good health and will be celebrating his 85th birthday in October.

Eugene "Gene" A. Ravizza ’50 was selected as a School of Engineering Centennial Award recipient for his commitment to integrity while designing and executing cutting-edge electrical systems and for his ongoing support of his alma mater. In 1954 Ravizza co-founded Cupertino Electric, a company that has grown into one of the top 10 electrical contracting firms in the country. Innovative problem-solvers, the company has “powered the creation of Silicon Valley” through projects such as the first semiconductor chip fabrication plant to an ultra-energy-efficient data center, to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He has generously supported the School of Engineering’s successful Solar Decathlon entries in 2007 and 2009, and has also created a scholarship fund for undergraduate engineers. Ravizza received the School of Engineering Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award in 1997.

John Gallagher '50 has enjoyed retirement for the past 23 years after a 40-year career as a civil engineer with the Washington State Department of Transportation (1950-1990). John and his wife, Evelyn, have been married for 57 years, raised 5 children, and have 6 grandchildren. They are now residing in an assisted living facility in Tacoma, WA.

Buckley, S.J., Cornelius
Cornelius Buckley, S.J., ’50 celebrated his golden jubilee of priesthood in March, when, to honor his life of service, his family and friends established a scholarship fund in his name at Thomas Aquinas College for financially challenged students. There, he is the head chaplain and assistant dean for religious affairs. Buckley has spent much of his academic career in Jesuit institutions—earning multiple degrees, teaching, and serving in administrative positions. His publications include the book When Jesuits Were Giants, Your Word, O Lord … Meditations for College Students and Anyone Else, and a translation of Simon Decloux’s The Ignatian Way. Frank Helfrich ’51 received a commendation in May from the Menlo Park Historical Association for 30 years of volunteer service. The 83-year-old historian and Menlo Park native helped to shepherd the nonprofit organziation almost from day one, archiving the town’s memories, which he still does. Fr. Ed McMahon '52 writes that in his 80th year he has finished a 12 year research project with small groups called "Rediscovering the Lost Body-Connection Within Christian Spirituality." It will be published shortly as a workbook with practical body-learnings and exercises that can transform a Christian's awareness of who Christ is today and who each of us is "in Christ."
