Wong, Tom

Tom Wong ’08, who won the Orella Prize the year he graduated, just earned a Ph.D. in physics from UCSD. He has accepted a post-doc in Latvia to work with a computational scientist.  He commented that even though his Ph.D. was from a physics dept, his advisor was basically a mathematician and he uses (of all things) Fortran95 to write a lot of his software!  So all three majors at SCU (Math, Computer Science, and Physics) have served him well. , and the year he graduated (2008).

Fonts, Augustin

Coming from Santa Clara’s School of Engineering, where “Engineering with a Mission” is the credo, Agustin Fonts ’08 and Ryan Leary ’08 feel right at home putting their ethics, values, and talents to work in their careers. Both are employed by a company whose software is transforming the way the world approaches household energy conservation. At Opower, Fonts is the international product manager and Leary is engineering manager, accountable for promoting good engineering practices and managing software release and testing by working with engineering services and QA release management for the company’s suite of products focused on energy efficiency, customer engagement, demand response, and thermostat management.

The company’s recent successful IPO was exciting, but both Leary and Fonts claim it is the founders’ mission to lower energy use that is most gratifying. Their careers in the energy industry really started when they joined the 2007 Santa Clara University Solar Decathlon team as undergraduates. After graduating, they founded their own start-up, Valence Energy, with other teammates.

Bruce, Lindsay

Lindsay Bruce ’10 made appearances on this season's NBC reality show The Voice.

Her early accomplishments helped set her on a path that led to an appearance on “The Voice,” but it was a long, sometimes difficult journey. At 13, the Santa Rosa native wrote a book and a song about having lost her uncle on 9/11. In high school, she became an international model and local celebrity. All along, though, she wanted to write and sing her own songs, so after graduating from Santa Clara University, Bruce headed to Nashville to pursue the one dream that still eluded her.

But for Bruce, the journey was a humbling experience. She was a struggling songwriter in a town where everybody is a struggling songwriter. For five years, Bruce developed her craft, learned what she could and performed in nearly empty halls. Always optimistic, though, she pressed on. A break came after three years in Nashville and at the very moment she was thinking of giving up on Music City once and for all.

“It was kind of a perfect storm of bad things,” said the 25-year-old who made it onto one of the celebrity team's on The Voice, where singers compete for a recording contract. “My landlord was selling the house, my roommate was moving, the production contract I had was expiring and my job ended. I was basically getting ready to move back home.”

In one of the crazier turns of her young life, she ended up auditioning for “The Voice” coaches on TV in front of thousands of people. Her journey to that point made her feel that she had nothing to lose.

Akins Jr., Thomas

Thomas Akins Jr. ’10 came up with the idea for the mobile app called podStatus, a music player that takes a stab at music discovery for frequent Instagram users (and other social networks) who have songs on their iPhone to share music for friends to listen and discover. He writes that no other app brings this level of music discovery to Instagram where users can actually listen to the music. It also has an algorithm that only makes music suggestions based on what users already have in their music library and are listening to right in that moment.
