Colvert, Lara (Zientek)

Lara E. Zientek Colvert '93 writes that she is pursuing psychology in the form of massage therapy. Over the years, her bodywork studies have taken her to Oakland and Hawaii, where she spent a very relaxing four weeks learning Lomi Lomi massage. She currently works as an on-call therapist in Campbell, stays involved with her two beautiful children, Tia and Stephen, sings with Ladyesong Vocal Ensemble, as well as another small group, and occasionally gets to perform with her husband, Bill Colvert, who is the trained "real" singer in the family. She also loves to spend time with her amazingly supportive friends, hiking, biking, singing, and taking her children to Santa Clara University every now and then to see all of the changes.

Bonini, Sarah

Sarah Bonini J.D. '93 has joined the Campus Ministry staff as senior administrative assistant. Sarah has a long history with SCU, beginning with her work in Orradre Library in 1989. She served as a resident director for several years as well, and most recently worked with the Northern California Innocence Project as project manager since 2010. We are thrilled to have her share her administrative and pastoral gifts with our team.

Sarah will carry on the custom of sharing bereavement notices with the campus community on behalf of our members who have lost loved ones and wish to share that information. So many have found this tradition a means of both offering and receiving support in a time of grief.  It is our policy to send out information only if the SCU member wishes it to be shared. Please send any such information directly to Sarah at sbonini@scu.edu. You may include information about funeral or memorial services as well.

Bertelsen, Thomas

Thomas E. Bertelsen Jr. MA ’93, a longtime benefactor and board member of the Jesuit School of Theology, has helped launch a $230,000 endowed scholarship fund for the Berkeley-based school, in honor of Oakland Bishop Emeritus John S. Cummins.

The donations have created the John S. Cummins Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will be invested to provide scholarships for students from Asian countries – especially Mongolia, East Timor and Nepal — to attend JST. The first scholarship is expected to be awarded in the fall of 2014.

“We are grateful to Tom Bertelsen and the other donors for helping open wider the doors of JST to theology scholars around the world,” said Michael Engh, S.J. “This is true to the Jesuit Catholic spirit of advancing the mission of the Church, wherever the need is greatest.”

Bishop Cummins began his relationship with the Jesuit School of Theology in 1962, when he became chancellor of the Diocese of Oakland and was made liaison to the three Catholic theological schools that were part of the Graduate Theological Union. He served on the board of directors of JST for ten years, and will step down in June.

Nguyen, Frank

Frank Nguyen J.D. '94 was a finalist in the Best IP Lawyer category at the 2012 Best Bay Area Corporate Counsel Awards. He was one of 27 lawyers, from some of the world's most recognized companies, who were honored by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times.

Nguyen is vice president of IP and licensing at Intuitive Surgical Inc. During his tenure, the medical device company has grown from $91 million in annual revenues to over $1.7 billion. This is in large part because of Nguyen’s expertise across the entire spectrum. His efforts have helped the Sunnyvale-based company increase it’s patents and applications portfolio from 200 to 2,000. He is also responsible for devising and implementing IP strategies for the company, which has more than 1,769 employees worldwide. Nguyen has saved and closed multiple deals, including Intuitive’s acquisition of Novare.

But law wasn’t even Nguyen’s first career. The engineer-turned-lawyer took classes at Santa Clara University School of Law part time while working at General Electric. Before joining Intuitive Surgical in April of 2004, Nguyen was director of intellectual property and chief patent counsel at Macrovision Corp. and was previously a mechanical and lead electro-mechanical engineer at Hughes, as well as General Electric.

As part of the Best Bay Area Corporate Counsel Awards, Nguyen was profiled in the article, "Former engineer bolsters Intuitive Surgical patents - big time."
