Alana Hagood Myles ’70 was elected, November 5, 2013, to the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District Board of Trustees. Monterey, Calif.
San Francisco Superior Court Judge Donald J. Sullivan ’68, J.D. ’71 received the prestigious Judge of the Year Award for 2013 from the San Francisco Trial Lawyers' Association at its annual black tie dinner at the Ritz Carleton Hotel in San Francisco. Sullivan currently presides over a trial department in the criminal division. Besides serving in the criminal division soon after his appointment to the bench by Governor Davis in 2003, Sullivan has previously served as a Judge in the Unified Family Court doing family and juvenile dependency matters and has had a variety of Civil Court assignments, including jury trials, elder abuse and civil harassment. Sullivan reports that he immensely enjoyed the 45th reunion of his class of ’68 and wishes he had had more time to spend chatting with his classmates. Sullivan lives in Mill Valley with his wife, Genevieve.
Charles McDermott ’71 just retired after 30 years of college teaching.

A veteran real-estate investor, financier, and CEO who has learned the healing qualities of art has donated $12 million to Santa Clara University to help build a grand, three-story art and art history facility on campus by 2016.

Kerry K. Daly ’72 has moved from San Francisco to Hollywood, Florida to open "An English Majors Bookstore" in early 2014.
Kathleen Viery ’72 married Louis Anastasio Jr. on October 13, 2013 on Block Island, R.I. The honor attendants were the Louis’ four granddaughters. Kathleen is a retired Chief Financial Officer. Louis is a retired teacher and swim coach.

Greg Fox ’73 is married to Anita Ruud, lives in San Francisco and they are blessed with three daughters Anna-Kristina, Elisabeth and Alexandra. He is a partner of the San Francisco law firm Bertrand, Fox & Elliot.

Deborah (Vicas) Nystrom '74 writes, "Living in the coldest state of the lower 48, Minnesota, with my true Midwesterner husband. We have two grown children who attended another Jesuit school, Creighton University. No grandkids yet. At this point in my life, my passions are making paintings, organic gardening, and exercise. I am a certified occupational therapist assistant but have worked in special education for a number of years. See you all at the grand reunion! Please show up for 40th reunion, I haven't been to one in 35 years!!"
Steven Mattos '74 writes, "Moved to Lodi, Calif., in semi-retirement state. Will be consulting with Amazon on their opening of a new 1.2-million-square-foot fulfillment warehouse in Tracy, Calif. Still blessed with my four children—now adults—and my four grandchildren, with one more due next March. All is good in life. Hello to all my fellow Broncos, Class of 1974."

Rudolf L. Brutoco '74 is being honored by Western University of Health Sciences as a health care pioneer at its annual A Tribute to Caring gala on Nov. 9, 2013. He is receiving Western U’s highest award, the Elie Wiesel Humanism in Healing Award, presented to individuals who best represent the philosophy and values of the university and have actively incorporated them toward the betterment of the human condition.
Bob Labozetta ’69, MA ’75 writes: "After 33+ years teaching at the secondary and lately the community college level, I have retired my chalk and white board pens, closed my grading software, and boxed my PowerPoint presentations and lessons. The last six years my wife, Susan, and I resided in Oregon, and last summer decided to chuck it all and travel full-time. We sold our home and most of our possessions, bought a motorhome, and now see the USA (but not in a Chevrolet). While Susan continues her art (sculpture), I may put my SCU education to work by writing who-knows-what. Figuring out how to brew beer on the road, fishing across this great land, and viewing historical sites that I discussed in the classroom but never took the opportunity to visit are prominent objectives as well."

Arnie Maurins ’77 was recently interviewed by NewsReview.com about the role of the library in a high-tech world. Maurins became director of the Washoe County Library System in 2008. He said, "There’s some limitations on what we can do as far as what the county does with technology. They’re generally one or two releases behind the latest software and that kind of thing, but I think within those limitations … we’re doing pretty well. Staff is starting to use mobile devices like tablets out in the stacks, helping people. And we’re going to start lending out those kinds of things to the public for them to use and maybe having a bar setup in the library where they can use those kinds of things and try out the latest stuff."
Steven Lovejoy ’78 has retired after 24 years as a chemist at Lockheed Martin Space Systems and is now living with his husband Thane Kreiner, executive director of SCU's Center for Science, Technology and Society, in Sebastopol, Calif.

Modesta Garcia ’78 credits her SCU experience and particularly her mentors, Professor Francisco ’66 and Laura Jimenez ’67, for providing inspiration and a foundation for her career in higher education and service leadership. On receiving her BA in Spanish at SCU, Modesta enrolled and completed a master’s in education at Harvard University. Two years later, she was hired as SCU assistant director of admissions and first minority student recruitment coordinator. This job prepared her for the next step as a Princeton University admissions officer. Subsequently, Modesta was hired in her dream job as faculty/academic counselor at her other alma mater, College of San Mateo, from which she retired after 24 years of service in May 2011. Modesta has been sought as a college admissions consultant and speaker nationally and in China, and consultant or committee member for the Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholars Program, Brown University, the College Board Western Region, Educational Testing Services, NACAC, and WACAC, among others. She now provides college admissions consulting and coaching for Ivy League, international, transfer and general college admissions planning. Modesta also served on the board of directors for the SCU National Alumni Association, which prepared her for such service on the local Harvard alumni chapters. She is Harvard’s (and SCU’s!) only graduate to be elected president of both Bay Area alumni chapters: the Harvard Club of San Francisco, and the Harvard Club of Silicon Valley. Modesta’s works have been recognized with awards from the College Board Western Region, Harvard Alumni Association, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Princeton University, and Santa Clara University Chicano Alumni, among others, for her support of students and alumni. Modesta’s 15 minutes of fame unfurled when she introduced Francisco Jimenez as the recipient of the award, 2002 U.S. Professor of the Year by CASE and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching; the award ceremony was held at the National Press Club, Washington, D.C.
Mark Hurtubise M.A. ’97, President and CEO of Inland Northwest Community Foundation, was recognized in the May 2013 issues of Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living magazine as one of "Power 50," who is making things happen in the North Idaho/Eastern Washington region.
Paul Duncan ’79 writes that he is "Semiretired and writing a book called High Technology and Complex Decision-Making. Spends time fishing. When Sony was first coming out with a compact disk, I worked on that as a consultant and had the name changed. They wanted to call it WORM (Write Once Read Many Times) and I convinced them that wouldn't go well in the States. I worked on over a thousand projects. I did the strategic two year and five year strategic planning for Kodak and its affiliates. I helped manage and market the introduction of the first color copier. I okayed the underseas cable in the Atlantic for private networks. From '75 to '79 my girlfriend at the time made me a handmade quilt bedspread and I still use it every night. It's still in great shape. After SCU went to grad school at Berkeley, but you just don't get that SCU community. Personal edict: 'Never abandon your own ship.'" I am the West Coast Director of the Pathological Liars Society. But then, how can you believe that??
