43Michael Filice and his wife, Corrinne, celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on June 1. He reports that he still plays golf at Seascape with a few SCU alums.
53Leo Balistreri retired from IBM in 1987. He and his wife, Josephine, have been married 49 years, and have four sons, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. They live in San Jose.
58John Collins is president of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the largest local bar association in the world. William D. Coffey and his wife, Nina, live in New Jersey, where they raised eight children.
66Xavier Baldwin married Janice Krattiger on March 27 in Valencia, Calif., and they reside in Burbank. Xavier has four children and Janice has three children.
69Margaret Maughan M.A. '71 received a doctorate in education from the University of San Francisco in May. She teaches at the State University of New York, Plattsburgh, and is restoring a house built in 1830. Michael Whalen married Sandra V. Peters.
72Kerry (Daly) Swarthout writes,"the Class of 1972-The Pitts-comprised of Lynne Laney, Gina Scalmanini, Sue Banducci, Kerry Daly, Alicia Foster, Jeanne Lobozetta, Madeline Damker, Sydney Brown, Ellen Scarr, Patty Wright, and Marilyn Stelzner have been meeting religiously-well, meeting annually-for a 'retreat.' This year the gang met at Silverado in Napa for a weekend!" Marilyn Leonard J.D. '79 married her partner of 19 years, Claire Sheils, in San Francisco on February 13. Marilyn was inducted into the Harbor High Hall of Fame in May, and received the Rollie Hall Award from the Santa Cruz Bar Association in June.
73Robert Finocchio, a business professor at SCU, and Paul Conrado MBA '82 completed a three-week trip to Patagonia in South America. Traveling by van with group of eight, they logged over 1,700 miles from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas. They rafted the class five rapids of the Futalafu River, hiked in Torres del Paine and Fitzroy, and saw much of southern Chile and western Argentina. They report that the wine was excellent. Lex Runciman has written a third book of poems, Out of Town, published by Cloudbank Books. He is professor and chair of the English department at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.
79Paul Duncan writes that he is "semi-retired while currently writing a book. Editor unhappy while I continue my quest to land champion striped bass in Sacramento Delta." Dave Fiore and Tracey '82 hosted a group of five first floor San Filippo residents from 1975 in Sunriver, Ore., in August 2003.
80Bill Quinlan and his wife, Juliette, announce the birth of a daughter, Bridget Anne, on March 4. She joins brother Conor in Jersey City, N.J. Bill has had success as a playwright, having plays produced in both New York City and San Francisco. His most recent play, "Revenge of the Chocolate Monkey," played in June in Brooklyn, NY.
81Daniel Hunter is vice president, corporate controller, and chief accounting officer at Marvell Semiconductor Inc. in Sunnyvale. Graham Rutherford has been appointed principal of Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa. He has been a teacher and coach, and most recently was assistant principal and dean of students. He lives with his wife, Lyn, and sons Edward and Giles.
82Frances (Basich) Whitney and her husband, Lawrence, welcomed a daughter, Victoria Kathryn, on Oct. 29, 2003. She joins sister Mary Claire, 4. Frances is the project director for K-12 mathematics for the Santa Cruz County Office of Education. Mike Hewitt lives in El Dorado Hills, Calif., with his wife Dana (Mallen), and their children, Michael Jr., 16, John, 14, and Madeline, 11. He writes that he is semi-retired, and "enjoying the skiing, golfing, boating, and the outdoors."

84Bart Howard graduated from the United States Army War College in June with a master of strategic studies degree. He is scheduled to take command of the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) in Fort Riley, Kansas, this October. Gerard Yun and his wife, Andrea Brown, announce the arrival of a daughter, Iris Mei, on April 10. Gerald has also been named director of Choral Activities at Georgetown University. He holds a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a master of arts in choral conducting from California State University, Sacramento. Prior to his new post, he was assistant professor of music at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. His wife is a political science professor at Wilfrid Laurier University.
85Todd Gookasian and his wife, Maureen, live in the Central Valley with their four children: Jennifer, 15, Philip, 13, William, 7, and Joseph, 4. Todd recently joined Cornerstone Structural Engineering Group in Fresno, which provides structural engineering design and construction inspection services. The Rev. Laura (Boltz) Holck pastors St. Mark Lutheran Church in Adkins, Texas. Her husband, the Rev. Philip Holck, pastors a church in the San Antonio area. They have two sons, Matthew and Paul. Timothy Jeffries serves at the chief operating officer of Mobility Electronics in Scottsdale, Ariz. He earned his MBA at Duke University.
86Brett Alcala was appointed to the board of the advisers for the University of San Francisco School of Law's "Investor Justice Project," a clinic that provides legal assistance to small investors. He founded the Alcala Law Firm in San Mateo in 2000 to focus on the representation of investors in securities arbitration and litigation matters. Laura Grimes earned her Ph.D. in historical theology from the University of Notre Dame, with a dissertation entitled "Theology as Conversation: Gertrud of Helfta and Her Sisters as Readers of Augustine." She lives with her husband, Matt Honkanen, son Nicholas and daughter Katie Rose, in Portland, Ore., where she works as a spiritual director and interfaith minister.
88Ellen Feaney and Justin Bishop announce the birth of a daughter, Stella Theresa, on February 17. She joins big brother, Ryan, 2, at home in Boulder Creek. Susheila Isaac married Derek Utterback on February 21 in Raleigh, N.C. Susheila is an engagement pricer for IBM Global Services e-business hosting, and Derek is a licensed emergency veterinary technician. They live in Wake Forest, N.C., with their five dogs and two cats. Ty Kaprelian developed and edited recipes for a newly published cookbook called The Lavender Cookbook, published by Running Press, while working at Mon Cheri Cooking School in Sunnyvale.
89Mia (Giannotti) married David "Buck" Bard on May 1 at the Bernardus Lodge in the Carmel Valley. They live in Menlo Park. Neil Greeley was honored with the Governor's Industry Award for Notable Teaching in Science by Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne. Neil is a chemistry teacher at Timberline High School.
90Linda Larkin and Brett Stineman are living in Oakland with daughter Audrey, born in October 2002. Brett is partner marketing lead at Fair Isaacs and Linda is senior manager of major gifts at the Oakland Museum of California. Jan Maulhardt and her husband, Fernando Agudelo, announce the arrival of a son, Vincent Rodrigo, in March. Vincent joins brother Dominic, 3, at the family's San Jose home. Jan is a marketing communications manager at Adobe Systems Inc. Cathy (Rodoni) Philopovitch announces the birth of a son, Andrew Edward, on May 3. He joins sister Kelly, 3, and Ryan, 1. Robert Sanders and his wife, Christy, announce the birth of a daughter, Caroline Ashley, on April 4, in Los Angeles. Kelly (Kestie) Tuohey and Mikko Tuohey announce the birth of Annika Meri on Sept. 16, 2003, in Walnut Creek. She joins sister Samantha, 4.
91Annamarie (Marsh) Louie M.A. '98 and her husband, Alan, celebrated the birth of their son, Daniel, on February 25. He joins his sister Michelle, 2. Jim Garvey and his wife, Jennifer, announce the arrival of their son, Kevin Timothy. He joins siblings Madeline, 6, Emma, 4, and Matthew, 2. Julia (Mori) Keller and her husband, Michael, announce the birth of their second daughter, Amanda Capri, on February 15. She joins sister Michaela, 3. Julia recently earned her teaching credential, and her two books were published by Saint Mary's Press: Seeking: Doing Theology with Girls, co-authored with Janet Claussen in and Retreats: Deepening the Spirituality of Girls. The family lives on the Monterey Peninsula. Kara (Koetl) and her husband, Kelly Underwood, announce the birth of their daughter, Katy Maureen, on April 19. The family lives in Morgan Hill. Lorie (Hannigan) Murphy and her husband, Tom, announce the arrival of their second daughter, Amanda Marie, on Dec. 8, 2003. She joins sister Hannah, 4. Christopher Park was promoted to assistant manager of First Bank's San Rafael branch after seven months as financial services representative. He oversees business development, sales, and marketing. He also represents the bank at the San Rafael and Novato Chambers of Commerce of which he is a member of the economic development and events planning committees. Matthew Semansky and his wife, Amy, welcomed a daughter, Emma Cornelia, in September 2003. She joins her brother Andrew, 2, at home in Danville. Matthew recently left his position at Lehman Brothers Private Client Group to establish a family investment office in Oakland.
92Dennis Cima is the new director of education and workforce preparedness for the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group in San Jose. He comes to the SVMG from the Santa Clara County Office of Education, where he served as the assistant to the county superintendent. Dennis lives in San Jose with his wife, Stephanie, and their two daughters. Bill Dingell and his wife, Kara, welcomed their son, Robert Thomas, on May 13. Bill works for Oracle in Reston, Va. Mark D. Emerson and his wife, Angie, announce the birth of a daughter, Avery McKenna, on April 2 in Silverdale, Wash. She joins brother Cole and sister Kendall. Molly (Foy) and Jeff Rich J.D. '96 are living in London where Jeff is a managing attorney for EMC Corporation. He oversees commercial transactions throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa while pursuing qualifications as an English solicitor. Molly is training as a specialist for Christie's Auction House, while raising their son, Jeffrey Jr., 2. Joleen Lenihan and John Compagno '90 announce the birth of their daughter, Katherine, on April 28 in San Francisco. Jeffrey Mar has moved back to the Bay Area from Southern California and is a managing director of investments for the Heritage Realty Group in Campbell. He earned a master's degree from USC and worked in the real estate and development field.
93Stefania (Capovilla) and Ken Miller welcomed their second son, Matthew Gaetano, on February 21. He joins brother Bradley, 2. The family lives in Morgan Hill, where Stefania is a stay-at-home mom and Ken works for Juniper Networks. Anna (Lenaghan) Herreria and her husband, Steve, welcomed their first child, Nicholas Esteban, on Oct. 2, 2003. Anne is a marketing manager at Mercury Interactive. The family lives in San Jose. Anna (Murphy) and Joseph Ryan announce the arrival of their son, Joseph Murphy, on Aug. 18, 2003. He joins big brothers Jack and David. Jessica (Staudenraus) and Mark Dowling '92 welcomed their first son, Aaron Jeffrey, on March 6. Jessica left a management position at Genetech to be a stay-at-home mom, and Mark works as a project superintendent for DJ Dowling General Contractor.
94Kelly Brennan and her husband, Doug Feick, welcomed a daughter, Claire Isabella, on January 13. Her brother Grayson is 3. Kelly is a full-time mom, part-time volunteer tutor, and board member for a non-profit literacy program called YES Reading. Paula (Holm) Jensen has started her own law practice, Holm Jensen Law LLC, in Portland, Ore. The firm provides corporate and technology licensing services to high tech clients in Oregon, Washington, and California. A play by Molly (Matthiesen) Lyons, A Most Notorious Woman, based on the real-life story of Ireland's last queen of the 16th Century, will be performed at San Jose's City Lights Theatre in October. Nicole (Mayer) Hamblett is a research assistant professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Washington. She is a biostatistician working to design cystic fibrosis clinical trials. She lives in Seattle with her husband, Kevin, and daughter, Abigail, 2. Barbara (Riddle) and Mark Hennelly '93 announce the birth of a son, Colin Murray, on February 29. He joins sisters Maura, 5, and Hannah, 3. The family lives in Sacramento, where Mark is deputy director of government affairs for the California Waterfowl Association, and Barbara is art director at Taber Creative Group. Jessica (Schneider) and Pete Davis welcomed a daughter, Rory Barbara, on Sept. 20, 2003, in San Francisco. Jessica is managing editor at Forbes Inc., and Pete is vice president of Credit Risk Management Training at Moody's KMV. Aaron Shelby and his wife, Brooke, announce the birth of their son, Pierce Fields, on April 14. They live in Dallas, Texas. Anne (Suiter) and Brice Head announce the birth of a daughter, Pauline Christine, on May 16. She joins sister Lauren at home in Palos Verdes, Calif. Jued Wurzbach and her husband, David Lipowitz, announce the birth of a son, Ian William, on May 7, 2003. He joins brother Eliott, 3.
95Jennifer Daniels and Craig Lynch were married on March 27 at St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco. The bridal party included Britta (Wagner) Bavaresco and Marita Quint. The ceremony was conducted by Mario Prietto, S.J., of SCU. The couple lives in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland. Jennifer is the dining merchandise manager for Macys.com and Craig is an account manager for Spectrum Marketing. Maria "Cathy" Madrid and Steve Teves '94 were married May 17, 2003, in Mission Santa Clara. The wedding party included Monica Madrid '03, Susanna Madrid '04, and Rick Brittain. They live in Santa Clara. Piper (McClain) Pluckhan and her husband, Brad, announce the birth of their second son, Ashton, on Dec. 26, 2003.
96Luke Bartels earned a master of fine arts degree in studio art from the School of Art Institute in Chicago. Megan (Smith) and Derrick Brownell announce the birth of a daughter, Dyllan Denise, on June 5, 2003, in Phoenix, Ariz. They also have a son, Jonah, born in 2000. Megan works in corporate communications, and Derrick is a Web administrator. Roger Spencer and his wife, April, announce the birth of their first child, Kendall Mernay, on February 19.
97Liesl (Niemeier) and Jeff Calado announce the birth of their daughter, Tessa Marie, on April 9 in Mountain View. Mariaelena Gonzalez married John Morgan on Aug. 1, 2003.
98Debbie Chang writes that she is "still working and loving the cruise ship lifestyle." She took an extended road trip across the United States and Canada during the spring. Kristen (Crowley) and Jeffrey Dennison welcomed their first child, Sean Vincent, on March 5. Kristen is a kindergarten teacher in the Oak Grove School District, and Jeffrey is a public affairs manager for the Tri-County Apartment Association. They live in San Jose.
99Jeremy Johnson married Patricia Yund on March 14 in Hinsdale, Ill. Eileen Pedersen was in attendance. The couple lives in Chicago, where they are musicians. Erin King received an MBA from the University of San Francisco in May. She graduated with honors. Michelle Stewart completed a master's degree in educational counseling in 2003, and is working on a certificate in Catholic school leadership and master's degree in educational administration through SCU and the Diocese of San Jose. She is working as a counselor at Presentation High School in San Jose. Rhea (Whitfield) married Calvin Lwin on Aug. 9, 2003, in Mission Santa Clara. The wedding party included Dana Bisordi, Shelly Babowal, Joslyn Burke '00, Tom Rippo, and Judson Werner. The best man was Sam DeBord, husband of Elizabeth (Hammonds) DeBord. Special readings were done by Pete Sclafani and Nicole Parianos. The couple lives in San Diego.
00Elias Portales opened his law firm, Gorguinpour, Nogueras & Portales, with offices in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. His law partners were classmates at Georgetown University, where he attended law school. Elias focuses on litigation, business and immigration law. He is also a commissioner on the Santa Clara County Council on Equal Employment Opportunity.
01Janelle Martinez earned a master's degree in clinical psychology, with a marriage and family therapy emphasis, from Pepperdine University in April. She graduated with honors. She is a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
02Jeanne Dorado is a translator/interpreter in San Francisco.
04Kathryn Ortiz lives in Tucson, Ariz., with her husband, and she is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Arizona's rhetoric, composition, and the teaching of English program. She is teaching first-year composition at the university.
