John "Jack" Clarke ’50 passed away peacefully at his Aptos home on Oct 28. Born in Los Gatos and raised in Saratoga, he was 90 years old. Graduated in 1950 at the University of Santa Clara, he received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, followed by a 35 year career with the Santa Clara Valley Water District. Jack was active in the Catholic Church his entire life. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in Europe and was honored with the Bronze Star. Jack is survived by his wife Eleanor of 61 years, and children Richard (Susan), Stephen, John ’79 (Jeanne) and Maureen (Richard), along grandchildren, Bryan, Colin, Kelly, Geoffrey, Genelle, Andy and Heather. Jack also leaves his brother Henry Clarke ’51. Any kind acts of charity may be made in memory of Jack to Santa Clara University
Daniel Joseph Vesely ’50 of Rocklin passed away peacefully on August 12, 2013, with his loving family by his side after suffering from Dementia for several years. He was 89 years young. Daniel was born to Joseph and Minnie Vesely in New York, New York on July 30, 1924. Daniel married his wife Annie Walker to whom he was married to for 65 years. Daniel is survived by younger brother, Joseph Vesely who is living in Massachusetts. He is also survived by his two children Gregory Vesely, Cynthia Gruber and her husband Joe Gruber, two grandchildren Kristel Vesely, Gregory Goodnough and one great-grandson, Jayden Goodnough. Daniel graduated from Santa Clara University with a civil engineering degree in 1950. He worked for several engineering firms over the years which allowed his family to live in Casablanca, where Greg was born and Madrid, Spain where Cynthia was born. He retired with the Federal Government Corp of Engineers. Daniel and Annie raised their children in Rocklin since 1964. He loved his family and friends, enjoyed reading, traveling and was an avid golfer until he became ill. He always enjoyed living on the golf course. We were blessed to have him in our lives and he will be deeply missed.
John Patrick Smalley '53, September 2, 2013. Born in Jackson, CA on Dec 30, 1928, and died in San Francisco from old age complication. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Beatrice; sons: John Joseph ’87, Patrick Michael, CHP; Dr. Val Smalley, DO; and Stephen, Sgt. SFPD; daughter and son-in-law: Christine and Tony So; granddaughters: Noelle and Adrianna So; Sister-in-law: Joanne Smalley; and nephew: Martin Catudio. John graduated from Santa Clara University, Civil Engineering. He was in the U.S. Army Artillery in Germany for the Korean War. He worked with the State of California for Bay Toll Crossings and on the San Diego Coronado Bridge and Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, City and County of San Francisco Public Works. He was a dedicated supporter of Pro Life Activities and was an active member of Star of the Sea Parish.
Gordon Abbott '58, July 12, 1930 - November 7, 2013. A resident of San Jose, Gordon Abbott passed away after a difficult and valiant battle with cancer. His family was paramount and he enjoyed participating in his children and grandchildren's activities. An ardent sports fan and active in the community, he was also well known for his political involvement. He served on the Campbell Union School District Board of Trustees from 1971 through 1982, the San Jose Council Salary Setting Commission from 1986-1994 and on the Governor's Advisory Board for the Agnew Development Center from 1998-2009. He also served on the Santa Clara County G.O.P Central Committee from 1958-1963 and 1994-2005, earning the nickname "Mr. Republican".
Gordon was born in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Issaquah High School, Issaquah, WA and earned a degree in Business from Santa Clara University. He was an accountant and served as a corporate finance officer for several small businesses over his career.
