Freeburg, Christopher

Christopher Freeburg '11 is currently serving with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest in Ashland, Mont., at the St. Labre Catholic Indian School. Ashland is a small town of 500 people in the SE corner of the state. 95 percent of the students who attend St. Labre are from the nearby Northern Cheyenne and Crow reservations and 78 of those students live in the dorms. Freeburg's workday starts after school with study hall. He writes: "I spend most of my time acting as a mentor and positive influence on these kids' lives, many of whom come from broken homes where they may experience verbal or physical abuse and witness substance and alcohol use on a regular basis. The rest of my time is spent immersed in the community, attending school functions, and learning about the history and culture (including attending sweats and pow-wows) of the local Native peoples."
