Payne, Troy

 

Troy Payne ’11 has signed with the North-West Tasmania "Tall Timbers" Thunder, a representative basketball team for the north-western region of Tasmania that competes in the South-East Australian Basketball League (SEABL).
 
At Santa Clara, Payne was awarded the Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors and averaged 5.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. After graduating, Payne was drafted in the NBA's D-League (Los Angeles D-Fenders) and has been working as an intern with the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers basketball operations department.
 
He is expected to arrive in Tasmania in February.

Burke, Emily

Emily Burke ’11 is in her first year as the volunteer coach with the Bronco volleyball team, working primarily on camp and office work.  She also works with practice planning. In the past year Emily coached at Archbishop Mitty High School as the JV head coach as well as coached club for Vision Volleyball club.  She has worked at the Santa Clara summer camps for the past four years.

The wedding party included maid of honor Danielle Espinal '12, and bridesmaids Julia Hill-Wright '12 and Sarah Safir '12. Charles Franz ’12, Greg Method ’12, and Keegan Wada ’12 won 2nd place in the ASME Innovation Showcase on June 2 with their design for improving the braking system of long trains. The team will be using their winnings to assemble a commercial-grade prototype for a 100+-car train.

Chong, Peter

Peter Loy Chong Ph.D. ’12 is the new archbishop of Suva in Fiji. Appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, Fr. Chong, who hails from the Archdiocese of Suva, is currently in the School of Theology at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit university.

Fr. Chong was born in 1961 in Fiji and completed his priestly formation studies at Pacific Regional Seminary. He was ordained in 1992, when he was incardinated into the Archdiocese of Suva. The Archbishop-elect completed his studies at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University with a Doctorate in Theology.

Catalano ’12, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after successfully completing the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) program and graduating with a bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University. The new officer will be branched to a specific corps in the Army to serve on active duty or in the National Guard or Reserve.
